Sorry for posing in AIBU. Really worried about this and desperate for advice so I'm hoping someone has experience.
We have had some pretty serious cracks in our ceiling. The whole town is built on clay and after the long, dry summer, and now the very wet weather, they have got worse. We weren't too worried when the cracks became more prominent at first as it's a terriace house and built in the 60's. We've always had cracks. Had the ceiling replasterd and of course they came back but always thought they were just cosmetic. We've been here for 5 years and nothing came back in the report about subsidence when we bought the house.
However. They just keep getting worse. They're really substantial cracks that look as if they are running along the beams. Some run along the ceiling then down the wall. Also, one side of the cracked ceiling is now lower than the other. This is the same on a few cracks around the house.
We asked a structural engineer to come and take a look to tell us if it's just cosmetic or more serious but they quoted us £460 just to have a look!!
Can't really afford that and any work that needs doing we would claim on insurance if possible.
Can anyone give me any advice or been through simelar?
