I KNOW HE IS !!! he's lovely, witty, has a few friends at school ... I just think other people are judging him all the time when they mention it to me ... AIBU ?

I have the exact thing with my DD. I either say ‘she takes a while to warm up’ or ‘she absolutely rules the roost at home!’
Or I say how lucky it’s that way around - quiet at school and a bit more rowdy at home.
I do know what you mean OP, but I’m so used to it now I don’t let it bother me. Also as I’ve seen my teen DD and some more precocious friends go through all the teenage scrapes I’m really glad that this ones a bit quieter and more reserved!

This is it OP: "The power of introverts". It's good for a positive (and correct, IMO) take on quietness.

Introverts

Children have targets on speaking and listening

If he's quiet he won't meet these targets

That's why it's mentioned

YABU saying someone is quiet is not an insult!

laceygo · 14/10/2018 12:48

@PrivateParkin oh, I do appear to have something in my eye after watching that (especially the end bit) thankyou for sharing that x

YANBU. People said this about me all the time growing up (and they still do, FFS, I'm 33!) and it was about as helpful as reminding me I was very tall. It can make you feel very conscious and I still have an underlying feeling that I'm doing something I shouldn't when I speak more than about 2 sentences in a row to someone.

For anyone enjoying Susan Cain's TED talk, she's also written an excellent book called 'Quiet'.

laceygo · 14/10/2018 12:48

He's 15 and can read and write and speak just fine thankyou Smile

I've had this all the way though school with my three daughters. Finally in year 9 one history teacher said "she's very quiet but that doesn't really matter I know she's doing the work. It's history not debate class" I nearly wept!

@VickieCherry I might say it one day too ... the friend that mentioned my son's quietness today I would love to say to her 'well your kid annoys me with his inane chat all the time ' (but I wouldn't dream of it really ) Wink
