People getting your name wrong...AIBU?

People...quite often say "Oh hi Patricia!" when my name is Pamela.

It's not Pamela but that sort of mistake.

It really irritates me! I never do it to other people! Why do they think my name is an entirely different one?

My name is Lynne, but one or two people call me Linda, which annoys me massively! The name Linda is OK, but it's not my name!!

On greetings cards I always get a few addressed to Lynn or Lyn. I find that irritating because I make a point of spelling everyone else's cards properly.

One neighbour used to write Lyn on my card (she did so for 20 years) so the last time I wrote Emma on hers, knowing that her name was Emily.

Yanbu. I will introduce myself as Suzzane and people will mispronounce and say Susan when they reply. For fucks sake. Really winds me up.

*not the actual names but to give you an idea

What I do when people get my name wrong is pull them up on it immediately and say...thanks is not my name, my name is X...or that is not how my name is spelled, this is how it is spelled

I have the added extra hassle of complete strangers the first time they meet me wanting to shorten my name..and I'm like no, my name is X...and when they ask why, ...I say because I want to be called by my own name the same way they are..

So op pull people up on it every time, they can only do it as much as you will allow them to..

Omg OP YANBU!

not real names

My name is Madeline and people (namely 2 men who are clients and like yo try and undermine me) always say Madelyn. It's irritating as hell but no matter how many times I correct them, they still call me that. Their collegues, whose native tougne isn't even English, manage to say my name just fine!

Also, calling people by their surnames drives me nuts! My surname is Grey, people hace called me Gary in email more times than I care to remember!

I can't even put into WORDS how much it irks me. I used to have an aunt (passed away a few years ago,) who ALWAYS spelt my name wrong on Christmas and birthday cards. My name's Helen, she spelt it Hellen... ALWAYS...

Sometimes she even called me by the wrong name. My mom is called Barbara, and she called me 'Barb' so many times!

Also my nana used to call me Shelagh - her sister's name! (Her sister is mom's aunt!)

In addition, a woman I know who lives in my neighbourhood (who have been avoiding for a while as she does my head in,) was bugging me, asking me to do her favours, and being nosey and annoying, and generally pissing me off.

When I said 'no' to 2 favours, as it 'doesn't work for me,' she suddenly, mysteriously started calling me by the name of a 'new friend' she kept going on about (a temp she had met at work.) The woman was a different race to me, half my age, and had a TOTALLY different name. So hers was Consuella and mine is Helen. Impossible to get us mixed up.

THEN, during another conversation, she started to 'forget' my husband's name, then one time, she even claimed that she forgot I had a daughter. Hmm

I had known her 5 years at this point!

IME, and IMO, most of the time, if people forget your name, it's because they don't care about you enough to remember it, or they are trying to make you THINK they don't care (and trying to make you feel bad!) or they are just rude and obnoxious. (Sometimes a mixture of all 3!)

As @littlecaf stated, when you do it back to them, they get very annoyed. I think 'why? You do it to me!'

I know some people genuinely cannot help it (if they have memory issues/early set of altzeimers etc,) but some do it on purpose, or simply don't care about you enough.

An elderly neighbour of ours always puts 'To Pat and Fred' on on our Christmas card. DH is called Pat, and I am called Helen, so I am not sure who Fred is!! And when she sees me she says 'hello Pat!'

But there is no malice there, and she doesn't do it on purpose, she is very scatty, and at least she sends us a card!!!

I do have a few more examples, but this post would be twice the bloomin' length.

disclaimer all names have been changed.....

Perhaps they could link to this thread from the baby names board, for all the parents thinking of giving their children unique names and spellings of names.

LoveTheBear85 · 14/10/2018 10:18

People don't often spell my name wrong, but I have started to worry if I have a speech impediment as if I answer the phone and say my name, regularly the other person thinks I say something different.
