Vented tumble dryer inside house

We're about to start building a kitchen extension. We currently have a washing machine and a vented tumble dryer in our outside loo, and as this will be demolished for the work, we'd be without a washer or dryer until the build is done.

I've been trying to work out how I'll cope, with various offers from neighbours to use their washing machines, but I've now settled on rejigging the current kitchen so that the builders can temporarily plumb in the washing machine. I was going to store the dryer in the dining room until the extension is done, when it will be vented via a hole in the outside wall.

DH has just announced that his plan is to use the dryer in the house by putting the vent hose over the dining room windowsill and out of the open window, where it will vent into the area that the builders are working in. No amount of my reasoning with him, sending him links about dryer safety, or explaining why this is daft and unsafe will convince him that I'm not being laughably unreasonable.

Which of us is daft?

Why is it 'unsafe' ?

Surely if you only use it when the builders are not working (they wouldn't want steaming out) then it will be ok

Before condensers this was how lots of people used dryers

You can get a vent thing for them

dementedpixie · 13/10/2018 15:56

My neighbour hangs the vent out her upstairs window when drying clothes

We had a small larder off our kitchen with a tiny window. That window was used to vent our dryer. Why would you think that venting a dryer through a window would be any worse than a hole through the wall?

LIZS · 13/10/2018 16:00

Ours vents into the utility room with an extractor. Not sure on what grounds you feel it is unsafe Confused

Aquamarine1029 · 13/10/2018 16:03

Why would it be unsafe? That makes no sense. You could get an indoor vent keeper. I used one many years ago and it worked perfectly.

MrTrebus · 13/10/2018 16:06

This is totally normal it's not unsafe at all stop being odd.

Oysterbabe · 13/10/2018 16:09

Are you aware that a window is a hole in the wall?

LanceStatersGold · 13/10/2018 16:10

Do you mean it has a hose? Totally normal to just chuck it out the window - lots of people have their dryers in spaces where they can’t install a vent!

SausageOnAFork · 13/10/2018 16:11

This is safe. Assuming it vents outside it’s fine.

HMC2000 · 13/10/2018 16:16

Ooh I never thought I'd be so chuffed to be judged unrrasonable! The guy who upgraded the dryer (it was one of those with a potential fault) had said that lifting the vent hose so that it goes upwards to go out of the window was a big fire hazard. (At the moment it goes out of the door, so the angle of downwards). If you're all raising yours over windowsills with no problem that's great. I really want to use my dryer... Thanks all!

Did he say why it was a fire risk? We used to vent ours through an open window as well.

HMC2000 · 13/10/2018 16:28

He just said that the angle should be level or down - it says the same on the instruction booklet. I think it's about lint build up? But if so many people have been doing the window thing with no problem, it sounds as if he/I are being over cautious. I'm going to concede to DH.

MrTrebus · 13/10/2018 16:30

It's only temporary anyway so It will be fine. Just keep checking for lint if you're worried.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/10/2018 16:45

The fire hazzard he's taking about is INSIDE the home do to lint build up within the vent hose/back of the dryer. If this is cleaned regularly you won't have a problem.

AwaAnBileYeHeid · 13/10/2018 19:04

To be fair you should be cleaning the vent hose every now and again anyway but most tumble dryers these days have sensors that shut it off if it gets blocked or too warm due to a build up of fluff.

Gluetap · 13/10/2018 19:09

We’re just coming to the end of our extension and have been venting our tumble dryer out of a window and it’s been fine. I’ve just made sure I didn’t go out whilst it was on. We also had to temporarily put the washing machine hose out of the back door as we had no proper drainage for it. Good luck with the extension!
