Drivers skipping traffic jams by using the hard shoulder.

So the M1 had major problems this afternoon culminating in some pretty shitty traffic on all roads round my area. I crawled along a dual carriageway for almost hour, a journey which would normally take just 10 minutes, but hey ho that's life. Except 25 drivers, yes 25, decided they were too good to sit in a traffic jam so sped (some at pretty high speeds) along the hard shoulder to skip the traffic. Apart from being annoying (because what the hell makes them so special that they can't sit in the jam like the rest of us) not to mention illegal, do they not realise just how extremely dangerous it is?

And just as annoying, if not more, is I have dashcam footage of all 25 drivers. Number plates included, so thought great they'll get there comeuppance when I email the footage to the police, except the police can't accept the footage unless it's from an on duty police officers dash cam footage or if l have another independent witness with dash cam footage. So basically people can do whatever the hell they like, regardless of how dangerous and there is nothing to be done! What a load of bull!

Aibu to think that some drivers are arseholes and that police protocol needs updating so law breaking twats can be prosecuted and get what they deserve!

And if you were one of those drivers ... you're an idiot!!!

@SpoonBlender honestly have no idea what make, DH is the technical one and sorted it out- came from Amazon.

@serbska it wasn't the motorway, it was a dual carriageway off of the motorway so no cameras.

@AhoyDelBoy a busy body would be submitting footage of one driver byt when 25 drivers break the law and put other lives at risk why the hell shouldn't I submit my footage. I'm sure if you had been involved in a serious accident and needed the emergency services to get through to you via the hard shoulder or were broken down on the hard shoulder and one of these fuckwits hit you or worse you'd be bloody grateful for a busybody like me Hmm. Or are you one of those entitled pricks who thinks it's ok to break the law just because you're inconvenienced by having to sit in traffic?! And fyi I didn't phone them I used the 101 webchat!

AhoyDelBoy Maybe if a few more were busybodies on the road, the entitled in-a-tearing-hurry arseholes might think twice about pulling stupid stunts that don't just endanger themselves, not that I give a shit about them self-harming by car, but others and cause obstructions to emergency vehicles.

We have dashcams in both our vehicles now after run-ins with selfish dangerous-driving idiots and I won't hesitate to send in footage at need no matter who thinks I'm a busybody

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 13/10/2018 14:37

I wonder if DelBoy drives a nice big posh car? Wink

tillytrotter1 · 13/10/2018 16:15

I was recently driving through the temporary traffic lights in the village, they were green as I arrived for once. Half way through a lycra warrior coming from the opposite direction blissfully passed three waiting cars, entered the road works and then expected me to move to one side to let him continue! He was most indignant, especially as I sat back, folded my arms and ignored him, he pushed his bike onto the verge and got through, still complaining.

ThePinkOcelot · 13/10/2018 21:43

Maybe Delboy was one of those entitled arse holes!! Sounds like it!!

OP this BBC News story today looks like police forces do indeed take dash cam footage: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-norfolk-45843691/shocking-dashcam-videos-released-by-norfolk-and-suffolk-police

ILoveMyMonkey · 14/10/2018 10:04

@ThomasRichard thanks for the link, hopefully Herts will pay attention and start doing the same. I've sent the footage and completed a form about the 'incident' so you never know.

To get to my place of work, there's about six different routes - a couple of them mean joining the A1 northbound which is a pain in rush hour so I tend to find an alternate route.

Anyway two Mondays ago I was driving on country lanes to go to work, quite a lot of people go this way as it means driving through a village with a petrol station. The lanes are as usual, quite tight on corners and you need to slow down. So I'm driving along and all of a sudden this huge Range Rover comes up beind me, very close to my bumper. So I slow down, no way is this idiot intimidating me to go faster, and I got a closer look it's a woman with a baby in the front seat in a car seat. We then join a queue of traffic and she goes into the opposite lane nearly running three cars off the road and skipping ten in the queue and joins the A1. So I called the police and said I have dashcam footage, she's driving horrifically considering she has a baby in the car. They said they would check ANPR on the A1 for her and check camera to see if she's driving in the same manner and requested my footage. I really hope she was charged.

ILoveMyMonkey · 14/10/2018 10:44

@BlueNeighbourhood1 wow what an idiot risking her babies life like that, seriously question what is wrong with these people. They surely can't be in that much of a hurry.

Chris Eubank did this and killed a man working in the motor way

footballmum · 14/10/2018 11:01

Sorry for the slight derail but can I ask a question about dashcams? I’m looking at getting one but don’t fancy the wires trailing in front of my windscreen to the charging point. Did you all have yours properly fitted? I’ve noticed Halfords do it but is it easy enough to do yourself?

ILoveMyMonkey · 14/10/2018 11:47

Mine is fixed to the dashboard rather than the windscreen and DH fitted it (but he is a techie so easy enough for him). Bit of a Google shows you could do the wires like the photo attached.

We were on the M6 once, major crash, we were about 3 cars from the front of the closure. It was genuinly horrid, watching the ambulances etc.

Then a load of fucking idiots (who I guess hadn't realised it was a full closure) came speeding down the hard shoulder, all slamming their breaks on when they got to the front. This also blocked access to a police car, they pulled them all forward to allow room to pass and then someone went and spoke to each driver. It was very obvious that the police were very unimpressed. We all cheered Grin

buscaution · 14/10/2018 12:06

Chris Eubank did this and killed a man working in the motor way

Unless he killed someone else the incident involving Chris Eubank took place on the A23. A dual carriageway.

RibbonAurora · 14/10/2018 13:51

@footballmum, We had ours professionally fixed/wired in place, front and rear, no wires dangling and there’s no obstruction to view by the cameras where they’re positioned on the windows. Cost a bit more but worth it to us.

Ontheboardwalk · 14/10/2018 18:30

Footballmum I got mine fitted at Halfords, only cost £30 for the fitting

Only took them 15 mins. No trailing wires and they were good at advising which one to buy with no hard sell.

SkySmiler · 17/10/2018 11:57

Buscaution - I was pointing out the serious and devastating consequences of these arrogant, selfish drivers.

buscaution · 17/10/2018 12:59

I can't see how? Chris Eubank didn't drive down a hard shoulder. Whatever took place, he isn't a similar example.

Patroclus · 17/10/2018 13:05

I'm not really sure what the police will accept as evidence these days. Seems if it doesnt come flying through their walls at high speed on fire its 'your word against theirs''

oldsewandsew · 17/10/2018 13:10

I saw someone doing this for the first time the other day! Speeding down the hard shoulder rather than stay on the slip road which was joining the motorway. And the reason for the slow traffic... because there had been an accident, and the cars had been moved to the hard shoulder! Some people are just absolute assholes. I wish those 25 people you saw could get a knock at the door from the police, just to terrify them!
