Overtime should be tax free

RedneckStumpy · 12/10/2018 12:34

If you are giving up family time to bring home extra money to support your family, why should that be taxed?

OP posts:
dontforgetbilly · 12/10/2018 12:36

Grin I can see no way that a system like that could be abused

SmilingButClueless · 12/10/2018 12:36

On that logic why should any income from work be taxed?

InDubiousBattle · 12/10/2018 12:38

Because it's income.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 12/10/2018 12:39

😂😂 that is all

chillpizza · 12/10/2018 12:39

Being paid for it would be a start Grin but no it does seem almost pointless to give up free time to not see much of it.

SpoonBlender · 12/10/2018 12:39

It's certainly improve the life of people on shitawful zero hours contracts.

InDubiousBattle · 12/10/2018 12:39

Ha don'tforget!
HMRC- " How many hours a week do you work?"
Employee- "3. The other 45 are overtime"

arethereanyleftatall · 12/10/2018 12:40

Utterly unworkable for most jobs, but yes I do find it unfair that someone who works 80 hours per week for £40k gets taxed the same as someone who works 1 hour per week for £40k. Again, impossible to achieve unfortunately.

SpoonBlender · 12/10/2018 12:40

But no, that's just ridiculous. It produces insane economic incentives for companies to cook the books.

PhilODox · 12/10/2018 12:41

All my income supports my family, so I should pay no tax in it? Hmm

Overtime is still paid, therefore it's still taxed, because it's still income.

RedneckStumpy · 12/10/2018 12:42

On that logic why should any income from work be taxed

No it shouldn’t but, that’s another thread.

Just wanted to rant after DH got his paycheck

OP posts:
Ellisandra · 12/10/2018 12:44

Well, when I was 17 my overtime didn’t interrupt my family life at all.

So I think anyone who is single without kids should still be taxed on their overtime, to fund me now that I was a husband and children. Awesome Grin

MakeAHouseAHome · 12/10/2018 12:45

Bu the same logic, no income should be taxed.

MQv2 · 12/10/2018 12:45

Great

I'll take my one hour contract and then 39 hours overtime at my normal rate tax free

arethereanyleftatall · 12/10/2018 12:47

Bless op, your ideas are very sweet, but if you don't tax income (as per your second post), how do you propose schools, hospitals, police, help for those who can't work would be funded?

LostStars39 · 12/10/2018 12:48

I wish I got paid for the hours of unrecognised overtime I do every week that is just expected of everyone. I’d be over the moon to get taxed on pay for it cause at least I’d be getting paid!

Want2bSupermum · 12/10/2018 12:49

The issue is that the extra cost of working OT isn't deductible. Also, if you want to pay less tax on OT put it in your pension. I've had a couple of friends who have done that. One guy retired from UPS on a nice pension because every time he worked OT that money went into his pension. Over 25 years it added up to be a lot.

wonderandwander · 12/10/2018 12:50

On the basis of the utter daftness of this post OP, count yourself lucky you’re employed at all.

Jackshouse · 12/10/2018 12:52

*On that logic why should any income from work be taxed

No it shouldn’t but, that’s another thread.*

Are you happy for pay every time you need medical care, school fees etc?

Want2bSupermum · 12/10/2018 12:52

wonder Its her poor DH who has worked OT!!!

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 12/10/2018 12:52

Surely any work outside the home is giving up family time? So by your logic there should be no tax if you’re working outside the home away from the family?

Glumglowworm · 12/10/2018 12:55

YABVU

otherwise everyone would cook the books to pay no tax and then there would be no money to pay for healthcare, education, police, fire brigade, refuse collections, all those essential services we all rely on.

It’s not even you who’s worked the overtime so get over yourself!

Neshoma · 12/10/2018 12:58

I've heard it all now.

ileclerc · 12/10/2018 13:00

Well I'd like paid overtime, I'd happily pay tax on it.

kaytee87 · 12/10/2018 13:02

Well that clearly wouldn't work Hmm
