to ask for first time mum's experience of induction?

I'm due to be induced at 36+6 due to high bp in the umbilical cord. I've heard that first time mums are likely to need a c section? Would love for the induction to go smoothly but slightly worried I'm going to end up disappointed and with an emergency section.

Is it possible realistically to be induced this early with your first? AIBU to be super anxious about it?!

I ended up with forceps and a hemorrhage. My waters had broken 2 days earlier i was having contractions but not dilating much so I was induced. I honestly think though the forceps happened bacause I was too tired after 3 days of contractions to push. I had an epidural going into the 3rd day but I wished I had had one earlier so I could have got some rest.
I think however the waters breaking was down to a cervical sweep that I had 2 hours before my waters broke and I honestly don’t think things were quite ready to happen.

I was induced in both my pregnancies, first was 3hrs 20mins from moment pessary was inserted, 2nd 6hrs 59 (longer due to back to back). Loved both my births, no pain relief and would do it again. Good luck

I was induced at 39 weeks because I had a weak pelvis and severe pain so probably on paper a higher chance of ending up with a section.
I had the pessary at 8am and the contractions started at 7pm, I gave birth to my 9lb 12oz DD before midnight.
I was also induced with my next pregnancy and again had the pessary at 9am, contractions started at 8pm and had him at 11.30pm.

Although it really doesn't matter what anyone else's experience is as yours will be so different. Good luck.

I had Induction with both my DD.
DD1 - 3 hrs 20mins from moment pessary was inserted to her birth. No painkillers and would say it was an enjoyable labour.
DD2 6hr 59min, took longer due to her being back to back, again no painkillers and an enjoyable birth.
I was expecting days of pain and labour! Don't be put off some inductions are ok xx

17 hours with DS from drip starting at 4cm. Ended up with lots of back to back contractions with no break. Ended up with an emergency C-section at 9.5cm due to DS being stuck and I became at high risk for a stroke due to my blood pressure. I had pre-eclampsia which is presumed that was missed through my pregnancy and became apparent when I was in labour, so no matter how horrendous the labour was, it probably saved mine and DS' life. Plus totally worth it to have my baby in my arms :)

First DD was induced at 36+4 as my waters went but no contractions. 4 hours from start to finish with no intervention or pain relief beyond gas and air. All went great. Don’t stress.

rhij86 · 19/09/2019 14:12

I am a FTM, was induced at 38+5 due to high bp (me) and reduced movement (baby).

Had pessary at 6pm, by 6am next morning was 6cm dialated and had baby at 11.38am on gas and air after 22mins pushing.

Was it painful - YES but just wanted to give you hope that not all inductions (especially for ftm) end in c-section. Also they don't always take days and days like the midwife told me it would!

Good luck xx

Dh did some research on this, and yes, you are very likely to end up with a c section. I would choose a cut off point, beyond which you will ask for a section rather than struggling on with induction, if things all seem to be pointing towards a c-section anyway.
I ended up with a c section.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/09/2019 14:19

Can’t remember the exact stats, will have to ask DH, but I think it was around a 50/50 chance.

Babynut1 · 19/09/2019 14:19

I was induced with my first. It was ok and I had a natural birth albeit with an episiotomy,
I was fine until I had to have the drip and it was awful after that. I didn’t cope well with the sudden increase in contraction intensity and the amount I was having.
I had an epidural and the rest was great.

On my second I had an ELCS due to complications. I’d choose the section any day over the induction!

My Dd was induced at 37 weeks due to pre-eclampsia.

I got my gel at 2.30pm, started moving about. Struggled to eat dinner, then had a good soak in the bath. At 9.30pm I was taken to labour ward.

My waters broke at 4.30am, DD's heartbeat was lost so they put the monitor on her head and she was fine. She was born at 7.10am. All was well and she didn't need special care as they had been concerned about her size.

She did get jaundiced but the midwives kept a close eye on it.

Zombie thread!

I hate to say this but my induction was awful. I was induced due to PROM at 38 weeks with a back to back baby. Went from nothing to 10cm in three hours. The contractions were agony and no one would believe I was in labour and I was refused any pain relief (even gas and air). Baby got stuck and narrowly avoided a c section but ended up with forceps (at least I had a spinal as I was in theatre) episiotomy, tear, and haemorrhage

My top tip would be make sure you are induced during the day when they have more staff on, don’t be afraid to demand pain relief and make sure there you have someone who can advocate for you if you get fobbed off

Iamclearlyamug · 19/09/2019 14:43

i was induced at 37+4 and had a natural birth with just pethadine (which was bloody useless for the pain but between contractions I was asleep)

orchid1234 · 19/09/2019 14:52

I was induced at 39weeks 2 days by tablet. It took around 14 hours for my cervix to open up enough for a sweep, then I was sent to labour ward a couple of hours later to have my waters broke and put on the drip, I struggled with the pain so had an epidural but this only stopped contraction pain for me so I still felt when pushing and knew when I needed to push.

Awe30 · 25/07/2020 07:19

I went into labor at 38 weeks, the nurses broke my waters before giving pain meds for some relief, only to find out there was meconium in the water so was reduced t save baby's life, it's definitely quicker but the pain is not so nice.
