To think I'll hate an under counter fridge?

We be moved into a new house and the main compromise we had to make for the good area/decent bedrooms/large garden was a small kitchen.

We have an old combined fridge freezer that doesn't fit anywhere in the kitchen (it's currently in the dining room), there's room for separate under counter fridge and freezer.

DH is keen to replace the old unit with a pair of under counter units, but I'm concerned I'll find bending down to the fridge all the time really annoying.

We could make space for a combined unit but we could lose a cupboard and counter space which are already in short supply. Plus its extra work.

Are under counter fridges annoying to use? Anyone got one and love it? AIBU to think it will be a problem?

I have one and a chest freezer surely you would have to bend down anyway to the freezer part

Singlebutmarried · 11/10/2018 09:31

Kitchen dimensions and plan please. Can’t visualise without.

On an aside, having had naff all work surface I’d be loathe to lose any now.

dangermouseisace · 11/10/2018 09:31

I have one. It’s ok. I wish it was bigger, but I don’t mind bending at all.

Hairytangerine · 11/10/2018 09:32

We have one bit a chest freezer in garage

TheFaerieQueene · 11/10/2018 09:34

If you have a dog, it might be a real pain!! 🤣

GummyGoddess · 11/10/2018 09:35

I had one in our last house. It was OK for DH and me, but wouldn't fit enough for us plus our DC. Could you have two of them and a large freezer in a garage or something?

It isn't a pain bending down to the fridge but if you had a bad back I imagine it could be.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 11/10/2018 09:36

We had this before we moved and my biggest frustration wasn't the bending down but just how little you can fit in the under the counter versions compared to a freestanding fridge and freezer.

I honestly don't think they are a viable option for a household of more than 2 people unless you have a spare fridge or freezer in the garage. I used to really struggle to fit batch cooked portions in the freezer alongside other staples (like bread or a bag of chips). I would fight to keep the fridge freezer if possible even if it does live in the dining room.

explodingkitten · 11/10/2018 09:37

You only bend downaround mealtimes, so that's not the whole time. I also firmly believe that bending down is good for you, see it as exercise.

seventhgonickname · 11/10/2018 09:38

Get one of those with drawers in.You pull them out,get to use all the fridge space and loose nothing at the back.My mum and sister have these and when I revamp my also tiny kitchen I am getting one.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 11/10/2018 09:38

Yes you will. I have one anc it’s a PITA.

nononsene · 11/10/2018 09:40

You’ll hate it. Under counter fridges are awful.

Bluelady · 11/10/2018 09:41

Don't you already have to bend down to get stuff in and out of the freezer? Give it a couple of months and you won't even notice.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/10/2018 09:42

Had for years and the bending didn't bother me at all.

Time40 · 11/10/2018 09:46

I've got one. It's absolutely fine.

Gardengirl33 · 11/10/2018 09:46

We've just got an u/c fridge, but only as we've kept the upright f/freezer too. I have to say, my oh is already annoyed at the u/c one! You use it frequently so you can see produce as easily as the upright! In a freezer you pull out the drawers right, so My suggestion is that you find some plastic crates (I use them to organize store cupboards too) so you can pull out and see stuff easier at least? I'd keep work surface if poss!

Laureline · 11/10/2018 09:55

I had one for 3 years. I HATED it. You lose storage place, and it’s a pain to clean.

teenytinypontypine · 11/10/2018 09:57

I don't mind the bending but it is small. Now we have kids I am hankering after a tall fridge freezer, maybe one of those big American style jobbies.

ToadOfSadness · 11/10/2018 10:49

We had one in our last house but only used it for milk, salad, cheese, things we would get out while near the kettle, cupboard and sink. I hate bending down and trying to reach stuff at the back.

We also had fridge freezers in the utility room and blocking an unused door. I would try to change it round if there was a way to do it.

sanitygirl · 11/10/2018 10:51

I hate the under counter fridge in my rented flat with all my heart. I would without a doubt make the space for a bigger fridge freezer if I could. Thankfully I'm moving soon and will be able to have the giant fridge of my dreams!

serbska · 11/10/2018 10:55

DO NOT GET AN UNDERCOUNTER FRIDGE

So, so, so annoying.

If you must get one get a drawer type one. They are slightly better.

You have to bend down every time you want something, and crouch to have a good rummage about. The space is always rubbish. Hate them hate them hate them.

Don't you already have to bend down to get stuff in and out of the freezer?

You get stuff out o the freezer, what, once every few days? Once a day max?

Fridge - breakfast, every time you make a tea or coffee, multiple times when cooking, all the time. bending bending bending crouching.

Beingginger · 11/10/2018 11:04

We have under counter fridge and freezer and I hate them.
They are both too small, we are a family of 5 and everything is squashed in there. Our dryer is in the dining room and I don’t want a fridge in there too so I’ll have to put up with it but it annoys me every day. Especially when I have to get on my hands and knees to get something from the back. We are planning and extension and I’m putting in a big American fridge/freezer.

pilates · 11/10/2018 11:08

If it’s just the two of you it will be ok but for a family of four plus you will hate it.

sashh · 11/10/2018 11:10

How bout you get the under counter fridge and freezer but with a stacking kit.

That way you can try both under counter but if you don't like it you can convert to an upright fridge freezer.

I now you said you would lose a cupboard but wouldn't you gain cupboard space where the fridge would go?

safariboot · 11/10/2018 11:13

We've had undercounter fridges and freezers for years. No problems, though there is just two of us. If I've got a lot of stuff to put it or take out I'll sit down to do it.

DeborahDowner · 11/10/2018 11:15

We have a similar problem, have put in 90cm wide fridge drawers recently, they’re great. Undercounter fridge not wholly suitable for a family in my view although we managed for years. Big freezer in garage.
