To be considering a caravan holiday in November?

Tiredandemotional123 · 10/10/2018 20:31

We're in need of a little holiday but don't have a lot of ££££ as I'm on maternity leave. I've been looking at caravan parks as there are some really cheap deals and i fancy going to Scarborough. AIBU to think a caravan holiday in November is a good idea and is there any point going to a seaside resort in the winter?

If IABU, what are my options for a short, UK break with young children that won't break the bank? I'm in the East Midlands and don't want a long journey...

Look at Ribby Hall, just outside Blackpool. We went when I was on mat leave, remember it was super cheap. Going back at Feb half term for about the 6th time - we loves it!

Ooh just looked, 2 bed cottage. Mon-Fri, 12th Nov, £269!
Bloody school holidays for us at twice the price!

We are going end of October to stay in a caravan in Cornwall. We have hired bed linen but we are going to take sleeping bags with us too to keep warm.

Normaknowall · 10/10/2018 20:50

Not unreasonable, but bloody optimistic!

Lots of games, films downloaded in case of poor WiFi, places to go inside planned. And hope it's actually cold and sunny so lots of sea air and beach walks, with chips at least once in a beach front shelter.

Hope you have a lovely time OP!🚋🍷

We have just booked a converted metal storage container near Edinburgh for November!!

Can be great....we did it but check if caravan got heating or even bring a couple of cheap fan heaters, nothing worse than being cold! Also indoor pool at park can be handy and picnic rug/splash mat in caravan so can craft/whatever ..Lidl had good waterproof trousers /dungarees ..
We did loads like this when DC little great fun

There are caravans and caravans - some are very comfortable, I think. Our elderly neighbours (80+) lived in a touring caravan over the winter a couple of years ago having set fire to their house. They survived.
We go to our boat in winter and that’s a bit like a floating caravan, although it has a wood burner and good heating.

JustBeingJobless · 10/10/2018 21:02

We’re going to Wales in a static caravan half term week, so October/November. I know there’s no heating so I’m taking halogen heaters with me and hot water bottles. It’s a change of scenery and I’d rather be away than finding jobs to do at home!

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 10/10/2018 21:04

We are going away at the beginning of November for a week and spending Christmas in our caravan - it is only DH and I though...

Tiredandemotional123 · 10/10/2018 21:41

So I'm not crazy then?! What's Scarborough like over the winter? Does everything shut down or will there still be enough to do? Ribby Hall Village does look nice @40andfeelingit ....

I’d be tempted to head to york rather than Scarborough as I think the is more to do if the weather is poor. Would add to cost though. Unless you are happy in a small space watching rain down the windows / reading etc ( I am but dd is grown up now)

Or Whitby if steam trains are exciting ( pricy also to go on but small children like to watch. )

Op.if you have a car there are v small.inland caravan sites with cottages that you can use more as a base then get out everyday

tor8181 · 10/10/2018 22:45

i have a 4 day booked on 18th of november and the caravan park is in the seaside practically on the beach

we really love going in the winter as its had full central heating or a gas fire and its so cosy with the dark and windy cold weather

we love a good winter rain storm in a caravan

we are also doing butlins just before Christmas

tor8181 · 10/10/2018 22:46

oh forgot to add its only costing us £87 for 4 days as we go school time

Teabay · 10/10/2018 22:52

Google YHA. They're fab places for you and DC, always boiling hot, private ensuite rooms, loads of seaside or city breaks.
Can do a mixture of their food or cook your own (ace kitchens, fridges etc), communal rooms with TV and games if you want them.
I've stayed in LOADS of them - would you like some recommendations?

Doubletrouble99 · 10/10/2018 23:12

We've been in a static near Scarboro. in Nov. before from what I remember most of the caravan sites in the area are on top of cliffs/side of hills so quite wind swept. What about North Wales or Blackpool. I would be looking at places near attractions with things like light displays there are some around us with fantastic woodlands and botanic gardens are doing it too. Or Blackpool illuminations maybe. If you have an oil filled or convector heater that you can leave on all night that would make all the difference as caravans get very cold in the night and it would reduce the condensation on the windows. You can't leave the gas fire on all night. I would take hot water bottles, extra fleecy blankets and welly boots and you'll be fine. A change is as good as a rest!!

Gbarmy · 10/10/2018 23:21

I'm Scarborough born & bred. I know I'm biased, but it a lovely place, and you'll find plenty to do in November. It's definitely quieter than peak season, but most places stay open all year round, so you'll be fine.

Recommendations would be great @teabay

I've booked a caravan for half term but in Suffolk, it's a resort type place so they have the disco in the evening for the kids and an indoor pool.
I'm looking forward to cold walks on the beach and then returning to the caravan for hot chocolates in front of the heater like I used to do as a kid with my Nan. I've also bought frustration (the board game) and mouse trap too incase it's crap weather. Go for it I say! Make some memories
