My SD is 8, she is notoriously difficult to buy for but Smiggle is a BIG win or any type of sparkly, stationary is a hit too.

Or JoJo bows if she's into her.

I have yet to meet an eight year old who is not thrilled by Smiggle. Boys and girls.

Deadringer · 10/10/2018 21:19

Agree with pp, my 9 year old daughter and loves slime, lol dolls and pets, smiggle stuff (you can buy a bag, markers or a pencil case if you don't want plastic tat) or my generation doll or accessories.

Hairdorables...my DD loves them!!!

Poodletip · 10/10/2018 21:39

Slime and squishies.

If it’s not a child you live with, have pity on the parents and don’t buy slime. The sooner that trend ends the better. Bloody insidious evil stuff!

If you’re looking for a ‘bigger’ present idea, I can tell you that roller shoes/heelys are very popular with my dd8’s crowd. Extra points if there’s lights or sequins on them. Often bought with knee pads/wrist guards for the practice phase. Buy them somewhere with good stocks and easy access if you get the size wrong.

Also there are some great ‘board’ games. Look at ‘Googly Eyes’, ‘Speak Out’ & anything that’s won the ‘game of the year’ for their age group in the last 2-3 years.

Inflatables are still big, and can be easily taken on holidays. And books, of course, since they’re finally into series & chapter books at that age. Don’t worry too much if you fear they’ve read them (from school, library, borrowing). My dd loves to own the set, and rereads the favourite ones constantly.

Dd is currently coveting a project MC2 detective case that santa will probably bring and a lego robot (I can't remember which collection). She's completely over unicorns and mermaids, but a beany boo, anything from smiggle or Claire's selection would be very much appreciated.

My current go to gift for this age is a secret diary (one with a little padlock). If I'm feeling generous I include a multicolour pen!

tararabumdeay · 10/10/2018 23:24

A torch, a transistor radio tuned to Luxembourg 208, a Secret Seven book to read under the covers with said torch, a Snoopy watch to check how much later than bedtime you'd got away with.

Torches these days are more affordable and much better; 208 is gone; Enid Bylton is lost in the past and Snoopy watches cost £300.

It were all green hills when I were a kid and it doesn't seem that long ago.
