Travel sickness remedies!

Hello, my nearly eight year old suffers from horrendous travel sickness on ALL types of transport. Can anyone recommend anything? We've tried acupressure bands, travel sickness pills, breathing exercises etc. Asked doctor and pharmacist for advice and they merely shrugged. Been told to give her chewing gum/mints on journeys.
Any other suggestions?!

My mum used to give me phenergan for travel sickness when I was a kid. It made me drowsy and that actually made me sicker. It doesn't work for everyone.

My son is very travel sick. Things that help him:
Avoid travelling in the dark
Look at horizon
Eat something like breadsticks before travel and during journey if needed.
Boots own travel sickness tablets
Keep as cool as possible - we drive with windows open and heating off even in the depths of winter

A magic breakfast!
I was extremely travel sick as a child ( still suffer now)
My dad came up with a ‘magic breakfast’ which usually worked for me. ( half slice of toast, no butter, a dairy Lea triangle and half an apple) I think it worked as mind over matter / placebo type thing.
Other than that I counted the number of red cars on the motorway, or we had to make up a word with the letters off a number plate, games which had me looking out of the window and not thinking about feeling ill.

My 8yr is the same. Things that help are travel bracelets and she has to have something to eat just before she travels: wholemeal bread, pasta dish, something stogy.

Your poor DC. I too get travel sick and have since I was a child - grandparents like 14 miles away and I used to vomit on the way! Things that work for me are

  • always facing forward (like on the train I can't be on the side of the table that is going "backwards")
  • not putting my head to the side or resting on the Window
-not sleeping And as PP plenty of cold air and water!? I have tried a lot of tablets but none seem to work. I think distraction works too - plenty of singing and games of "i spy"

As a kid I would get horrific travel sickness. For me the solution was to travel behind the passenger seat, windows open and no air vents open.

I second the sitting on newspaper, our school also sit children who get travel sick, on newspaper. It seems to work!

Have you tried Stugeron. Works wonders on my dd.

If you're shopping in the US...

Non-drowsy Dramamine and Bonine contain meclizine.

Regular and Kids Dramamine contain dimenhydrinate.

I find Bonine works for me (I get very seasick without it) and my quite travel sick child, plus you can chew them and they don't taste too awful. But it's probably worth trying whatever you can to see what works.

You can find them in drugstores all over.

I'm pretty sure the newspaper thing is placebo effect.
A coach drivers told me that they do it so that if the child is sick the seat remains clean. If the seat gets plastered in sick 1) thats a nasty job for them to clean it and 2) means some poor kid has to stay sitting on a wet sicky seat the whole journey if the coach is full with no spare seats.

I've had awful travel sickness my whole life. I have remedies prescribed by my gp but for shorter journeys I use Boots own brand and they're quite good. The easiest thing that helped for me as a kid was sleeping so we always ended up setting out very, very early in the morning for longer journeys so that I could try to sleep on the way. Mints, open windows, forward facing, front seat help too.
