Local takeaway displaying false food hygiene rating?

bobstersmum · 10/10/2018 11:58

Our local Chinese was up until recently 5 star food hygiene rated. I was checking a new restaurants rating the other day and checked the Chinese takeaway out of interest, it is now a 1!! It was rated two months ago. However I walked past yesterday and it still has the sticker in the window stating its 5. It says in the new rating major improvement necessary. Aibu to report them to the council? It could be dangerous for a pregnant woman to eat poorly prepared food for instance, I don't think Iabu but I will let mumsnet decide!

YANBU, report them. Also go to the local newspaper and encourage them to publish an article about it.

This might sound silly but why are restaurants with one star even allowed to sell food?? how bad must it be to get 1 star Shock

Strawberrybelly · 10/10/2018 12:08

Are you in England?

heatherscot · 10/10/2018 12:09

Report it! That's well dodgy...

Whilst i agree they should be showing the correct rating, the ratings do not show the quality of food. For example You can lose a star by running out of soap and not replacing it straight away. Even if the soap bottle is sat next to the dispenser ready for you to put in but you decide to serve a customer first then go back and replace the soap. Because its not in the dispenser yoi can lose that star. Also things like the silicone seal around the tap showing signs of wear, good bye star! But to from a 5 to 1 to me shows bad practise in many areas and i would be avoiding. I have seen a fantastic high quality food very clean kitchen be given a 1 because the building wasnt up to scratch. The rating had nithing to do with the food.

CynthiaRothrock · 10/10/2018 12:36

Also after a bad review you are given a grace period to improve

redsummershoes · 10/10/2018 12:42

cynthia tbh not having hand soap ready to use is pretty vile.

but for a place to have only one * a lot more needs improving than replacing hand soap.

They may have been reinspected by now and been awarded a 5. I would call the local environmental health department to check, if they are displaying the wrong rating then environmental health will follow it up!

TheDarkPassenger · 10/10/2018 12:58

I tend not to eat below 3* and I’m not usually that fussy tbh, it’s just from working in hotel management before my career change I know just how bloody bad a kitchen has to be to get a 1 or 2.

Flat out refused to go to a local Chinese restaurant with my friends (I wasn’t rude about it) and they all took the piss out of me. Next thing it’s shut down for someone finding rats. The owner has been sentenced.

I’d 1000% report it to EH, I’ve reported somewhere I’ve been working before too, it’s gross and unacceptable

bobstersmum · 10/10/2018 13:14

I have rang the council but the lady is off today! Even if its awaiting another follow up, shouldn't the sign be taken down temporarily? Surely it should as its misleading.

Who would buy food from a 1 star? Why are they even allowed to open? 😷

Yes report it, if they want a 5 star again they need to get there dirty act together

bobstersmum · 10/10/2018 14:03

I don't know anyone who would knowingly use a one star rated place. I said to dh surely for one star they should be shut down as it says major improvement necessary.

@redsummershoes i didn't say it wasn't vile. I was giving an example of how easy it is to lose a star.
Having worked in catering for far too many years , and i thank god i no longer do. i have seen some very appalling practices. star ratings also seem to vary between councils/inspectors and i have seen inspectors pass something another inspector would fail so i dont belive them to be an accurate rating.

I have seen (and walked out of a job over this!) In A so called 5 star kitchen, chefs pick food off the floor and change day dots so they dont lose stock. I have also seen better hygiene practices in 2/3 star facilities but they have that rating because their is a problem with the building its self (rented property) and the landlord refusing or delaying fixing it. Again not an accurate system. Still wrong to display the wrong star though.
