To feel like leaving my boss in the shit?

I have a new manager but I am not in a new job (iyswim, M’s the new one). There is an ongoing unresolved query over whether there is enough money in the budget to keep me full time. I am fully aware of this and had explored other options with previous manager. M is aware of all this.

M is very green and new, we get along but also can be very territorial. M over involves in lots of minutiae and makes rash decisions without considering them properly.

My job is not my ‘forever job’ and I have made it clear that I will want to progress at some point.

Someone more senior than M enquired re my availability and that they were interested in contracting me for 2 days a week to do a particular job. I want to do this job, am training for it and it would actually complement my current job - although I would have to reduce hours in job 1 to do job 2. The jobs would mesh well and benefit everyone overall as part of the overall direction of travel. It would also solve the issue of not enough money in the budget for me full time perfectly.

Manager immediately ruled me out stating that this would put too much pressure on their own job, due to other factors which have nothing to do with me. I have also watched M sabotage other things for similar reasons.

I see this as bloody ridiculous. I could be left with half a job if they go and contract someone else to the new post, so much so I feel like just dumping M in it and getting a new job. I tried to talk to M and they shut me down and said it was non negotiable!

Sod M; get a new job!!

PanchoBarnes · 10/10/2018 01:03

Pookie,
The M has shot her/himself in the foot.
You had a great idea.
The writing is on the wall, concerning this M.

Hope you find your new job soon!
They'll be lucky to have you.

KeiTeNgeNge · 10/10/2018 01:08

Talk to them directly and also look for a new job

AjasLipstick · 10/10/2018 01:09

Ask for a meeting with the more senior person. Explain your position and tell them that you're going to be resigning because of the impossible position you're in.

Then resign. Clearly state why.

Something good may come of it.

MozzieMagnet · 10/10/2018 01:41

Do you have savings? Any chance at all you could afford to resign and take the 2 day contracting job whilst jobhunting? New manager then gives you a reference - would not trust current M not to sabotage you even if you land something soon subject to references.

PookieDo · 10/10/2018 09:20

No savings unfortunately

I raised this with M’s boss because I know they are in full agreement this is a good plan. But I haven’t had feedback as to what happened when they met up

I could go straight to the contractor, I am tempted but I also don’t want M to brand me sneaky. Also it might not look good as if we don’t communicate (well, we don’t)
I also have one last iron in the fire which is a mutual contact, who also thinks this is a great plan. I just am anxious about missing the opportunity completely

Have seen a job online which could suit me. Am applying!

Apply and let the devil take the M!

AjasLipstick · 10/10/2018 09:49

I think you should risk being branded sneaky, it's not sneaky. It's you looking out for yourself in a bad situation.

AGirlinLondon · 10/10/2018 09:53

Get away from this manager. As soon as you can.

trojanpony · 10/10/2018 10:00

From experience...
Get a new job
