To be terrified?

Can anyone tell me how they deal with the recent alarm call about climate change? I feel utterly powerless and terrified.

This isn't meant to sound trite, but there's no point worrying yourself sick over something you've got no control over.

cricketmum84 · 09/10/2018 18:44

As above. With bells on.

rosamacrose · 09/10/2018 18:58

It is overwhelming.
Some things you can do.
Share the BBC article.
Even in a small way, reduce your carbon footprint.
Look at how you use energy and reduce where you can.
Swap to a renewable supplier. Come away from the fossil burning giants that use coal, oil and gas.

Look at the foods you buy, try not to use imported foods.
Reduce car journeys where you can, car share where possible. Use public transport where feasible.

Its a lot to take on in a busy life, I know. Taking control of what I contribute makes me feel less helpless.
Above all TALK about it! Get people thinking about it.
We can't change governments in countries we don't vote in, but by reminding everyone we know, how this needs action, now, will go some way.
Small deeds, by many, can effect change.

I less hopeless by making changes in my life.

Robots1Humans0 · 09/10/2018 19:02

I'm with you OP, been looking at my kids today wondering what the future holds for generations to come

rosamacrose · 09/10/2018 19:30

All of us can feel more in control by making small changes.
Rather like saying I won't vote, mine won't make a difference.
If three million people vote, it makes a change.
If three million of us stand up and say to the government, keep climate change at the front of your agenda. We can make a change.

rosamacrose · 09/10/2018 19:32

Or, we can sit with it gnawing away at us.
Scared to death.

Doingreat · 09/10/2018 19:35

What's the article? Can someone link?

Also, can someone suggest good renewable suppliers?

Thanks.

OhHolyJesus · 09/10/2018 19:40

Have a look at the Ethical Boards OP and do what you can. Even little things help, I've been going round turning lights off and I've pledged not to use the tumble drier winter.

I like DoNation for more ideas about carbon savings and there are lots of ideas to reduce single use plastic on zeros waste blogs and the boards here.

Doing something is better than nothing and it makes me feel slightly less powerless, but I feel the same OP, it's so depressing and I despair about the world my child will inhabit. Hopefully we can look back on 2018 as the year that it changed 👍🏻

This probably won’t be a popular suggestion but as well as all the energy saving ideas, you could go vegan. Animal agriculture contributes significantly to climate change.
climatenexus.org/climate-issues/food/animal-agricultures-impact-on-climate-change/

Replace your car with an electric one, put solar panels or a windmill on your house to provide the electricity for it.
Obviously these things depend on your finances and whether your house is suitable for sticking things on the roof, but it’s something to think about.

rosamacrose · 09/10/2018 21:45

Renewable suppliers: Good Energy, Ecotricity, Octopus, Bulb, to start. There are more.
I can't link, but search climate change on the BBC website.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/10/2018 22:03

It's called fear mongering. Just relax and love your life as responsibly as you can.
