Just the above really.I have four adult children all with partners and I am running out of ideas what to buy each year!
I’ve done hampers, cash, gift vouchers, experience days etc but not sure any of it was particularly valued.
All suggestions gratefully received.

Do you buy individual gifts or a joint present per couple?

EnglishRose13 · 09/10/2018 17:41

One year my dad bought us all slow cookers and I love it.

MrsJayy · 09/10/2018 17:42

I don’t have adult DC but I’m a DIL and my husband’s parents buy us lovely things.

All of the things you mentioned we’d love. Last Christmas I got:

Set of lipglosses from Clinique
L’Occitane body lotion
Silver earrings
A funny book

DH got

Ticket to Test Match
Jeans
DVD
Jumper

We also got a Nintendo Switch as a joint present

Aprilsinparis · 09/10/2018 17:59

Magazine subscriptions, perfume, aftershave and beauty products.

missyB1 · 09/10/2018 18:04

I often buy ds and dil a gift card for a restaurant/ cinema/ theatre so they can have a night out together.

MatildaTheCat · 09/10/2018 18:04

About 4 quite nice gifts for the dc. Say a jumper, new bag, aftershave and book. Maybe a couple of small things like chocs. Their partners get a nice but not exceptional gift, last year cashmere scarves and a lipgloss.

DH and I do buy each other nice gifts, a weekend away, perfume, always something for the house, it depends on what we want and how creative we are feeling.

Helendee · 09/10/2018 18:08

Lovely ideas there.
Thank you everyone. 😗

For at least the past ten years my sister and I have gotten:

Money
Pyjamas
Perfume
Bottle of something alcoholic (usually Bacardi for me!)
Maybe some chocolate

And that's about it, along with any random bits my parents might have saw and picked up.

FloPen · 09/10/2018 18:12

A £5 limit for everybody (and them to us). Simple

anniehm · 09/10/2018 18:13

My girls don't have partners yet, still at boyfriend stage, but my parents buy us things like hotel vouchers or theatre vouchers, failing that M&S vouchers, plus my father likes to buy my dh tools, a man thing. We buy similar things back - stupid I know. This year, none of this silliness, 5* cruise with them instead.

Nomorechickens · 09/10/2018 18:24

IF you think they don't appreciate your gifts (even cash), maybe take it down a notch - here are some ideas
Secret Santa
Charity shop challenge - set a limit of £5 or £10 a gift and get something fun or amusing
Moneysaving Expert agreement not to give unnecessary gifts
Charity donation/gift - doesn't have to be a goat!

bakingdemon · 09/10/2018 18:30

My parents give us:
Books (we let them know what we'd like)
Gift vouchers for our local cinema

My MIL gives me perfume or body lotion and I wish she wouldn't as she always chooses things that aren't my taste.

Alevel · 09/10/2018 18:36

My mum buys amazing presents. We've had a coffee machine. Atop of the range radio. A gin tasting night with a hotel. Theatre tickets.

SewButtons · 09/10/2018 18:38

In my family my parents usually get my sister and I to put together a wish list and then they choose things from it to their budget.
Last year I got a jumper, new purse, some books and a handbag.
Means we get something we like - because we’ve chosen it but it’s still a surprise because we don’t know what we will get from the list.
For DP last Christmas my parents bought him some lovely special edition copies of two of his favourite books.

Don’t really do Christmas with DPs family but they usually buy me lovely gifts for my birthday and sometimes just because. They bought me a beautiful necklace I had admired when out with his Mum several months previously for my birthday this year. They also sometimes buy me lovely things from L’occitane when we visit because they know I like them (Also very useful to not have to bring toiletries when I visit).

thismeansnothing · 09/10/2018 18:38

On previous years my mum has got me and DH Le Creuset stuff....and a slow cooker which we didn't have and have used to death since. Then we Had DD and I've told her not to bother for me and DH but she does us a little gift bag with nice chocolates, tea, coffee, biscuits, a mug etc

HollowTalk · 09/10/2018 18:42

I ask mine for a wish list in September and I only buy from that list, unless I'm really dead certain that I'm on the right track. They've forgotten the list by Christmas, so it's still a surprise. I remember too many presents when I was younger which weren't quite right. I also give them money.

Normandy144 · 09/10/2018 18:45

My parents got us an annual subscription to the craft gin club! It's awesome! We get get a quarterly gin delivery.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/10/2018 18:46

In my family my parents usually get my sister and I to put together a wish list and then they choose things from it to their budget.

We do this within our family too, so parents, we siblings plus partners and kids all have a wish list. (Three of us have birthdays within a month after Christmas too, so the wish list doubles up!)

dreamyflower · 09/10/2018 18:47

My parents normally give my DH and I a £20 voucher for somewhere and a little token gift each (like socks). We're happy enough with that. His parents spend a bit more and get us lots of individual gifts. But I suggested this year we get something joint for the house- like new plates or a kettle or money towards a hoover.

bakingdemon · 09/10/2018 18:47

And subscription presents are great! We've been given cheese (from Neal's Yard) and chocolate (Cocoa Runners) which were awesome.

Larasshadow · 09/10/2018 18:48

Our children aren't old enough but my parents often get my sister's and I something like a hairdryer, straighteners, pjs, or something else we have on our lists and usually get our partners a game or something else they want. We have had joint presents with our partners. One year we got a saucepan set, another year we got a rug, usually house things are joint gifts.

We all make lists in our family but usually have a £20 limit. If someone wants something more expensive then a few of us club together to get it as there is no point buying things that people don't want.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 09/10/2018 18:49

Oh and we are allowed to deviate from the list - it's wishes not orders Wink
