So DCs' school have produced a very professional board which is displayed in several locations around the school and referred to at open eves etc which contains a photo of each child, their full name and where they went after A levels. For kids who went to Uni, it has the University name and the subject (plus college for Oxbridge). For those who got jobs or apprenticeships it has the company name, the level of apprenticeship and the subject/qualification.

My DC are not on it but DS1 will be next year (assuming he achieves something they want to bragg about!).

Is this OK, so much personal information on display in these times of GDPR? (or even before, TBH). Not only does it tell people where these young people are now and what they are doing, but it also gives a fairly good indication of what their results were.

I wouldn't be happy, think that's far too much information. My son's school just had x number of leavers went to University, x number went onto apprenticeships, x number joined Army, RAF etc. No names and no university names. The top achievers in A level results got a photo and mention in the local paper but I assume they gave permission for that.

wurzelburga · 08/10/2018 21:06

My local newspaper always publishes the names and A level results (including A star and A grades) of A level candidates in all the local schools. Don’t know if you can opt out.

PlatypusPie · 08/10/2018 21:09

My DDs schools had the uni and subject info on their website but no photos.

Athena51 · 08/10/2018 21:13

When my DS left school they had an awards evening with a programme that had all the leaver destinations in. It had his name, the university he was going to and the subjects he was going to study. No photo and I assume it was just available to parents who had year 13 kids.

This was 6 years ago now but I didn't think anything of it tbh

Lazypuppy · 08/10/2018 21:13

My school.had a table in the back of the end of year booklet that was produced which said each of our names and where we went. Don't see the problem

PorkFlute · 08/10/2018 21:15

Id they’ve got the permission of the student since they’re over 18 I don’t see the problem.

Gorgiqana · 08/10/2018 21:15

Collated info is fine, or publishing a few case studies of former students (with permission) would be fine.

But I would not be happy about this information being provided with the names and destinations of every single individual.

SecretlyChartreuse · 08/10/2018 21:18

It’s more common to just publish a list of universities (and maybe courses). Listing individual Oxbridge colleges is a little odd though.

The Alumni network might get name and courses but that’s opt-in.

WTF?!

And you absolutely can opt out. It's personal data and GDPR gives you rights over it. We have to get parents at our school to given permission for any use of photos, and this would be even more serious!

OatsBeansBarley · 08/10/2018 21:20

Too much information.

ourkidmolly · 08/10/2018 21:20

I think that's a GDPR breech unless there's full written consent. I think it's an appalling idea either way.

OpiningGambit · 08/10/2018 21:20

I've never seen individual destinations, only lists like 90% went to university, 20% to Oxbridge or whatever.

Bestseller · 08/10/2018 21:22

If we put up photos of kids on trips etc we never put their full names with them

OP posts:
OpiningGambit · 08/10/2018 21:25

It's even the for the ones who are doing apprenticeships if they post the exact company!

We had all our names and addresses published in our yearbook (late 90s). I didn't think anything of it because I was an idiot teenager, but then I started being sent anonymous religious tracts to that address, which turned out to be from someone with the yearbook!

WelcomeToShootingStars · 08/10/2018 21:26

Is it you who has a problem or your DC?

I don't really see it as a big deal. It's the sort of info that young people tend to offer up freely on their social media.

pallisers · 08/10/2018 21:28

way too much information. I've had kids in 3 different high schools and what you got was a list of acceptances to various colleges/universities - not linked to individuals, just the university names and how many people were accepted. I wouldn't be happy with that at all.

FruitofAutumn · 08/10/2018 21:31

absolutely normal round this way

giveitfive · 08/10/2018 21:35

Normal at ours. There is a banner in reception and an alumni wall with photos and destinations. The featured students consent of course.... it's wonderful to see all the successes and different pathways.

JulietteGrimm · 08/10/2018 21:35

We had that board at my school 20 years ago! Probs not okay without consent, but I don't see the problem if the leavers don't mind.

FruitofAutumn · 08/10/2018 21:36

Always done this here in the local and regional newspapers until this year.Well a list of Alevels attained and a for A and for A rades. There was a statement to say that it WAS allowed under GDPR as they are public examinations, but some school were nervous about it.

toastedbeagle · 08/10/2018 21:36

Where I went to school they engrave your name and uni degree/ place when you graduate on a big wooden board that's on the school wall for all eternity... is this what you mean?

titchy · 08/10/2018 21:38

Maybe they've all agreed to it?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 08/10/2018 21:40

We had it in our Speech Day booklet, I’m sure you could opt out but I can’t remember it being made clear. The whole school had a copy plus all the parents. Might be totally different now. Definitely no one would be bothered to put together all the photos though.

I did like seeing what everyone went on on to do though and there is a raising aspirations element. It wouldn’t have been the same if it was anonymous as you were always looking for people who you looked up to or had something in common with.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 08/10/2018 21:44

I’d wonder about this under data protection act tbh

Cynderella · 08/10/2018 21:48

Everything about our sixth form (website, prospectus) has a list of destinations and courses for last year's students, but no names/photos. We always have a fair number going to Oxford, Cambridge, Russell Group unis, so it's a selling point for some parents.
