House egged at Halloween?

halloweendread · 08/10/2018 14:57

Anyone faced repercussions for not handing out sweets/candy to un-costumed teens on Halloween? Planning to spend whole evening out this year. That might piss them off too, though!

I hate Halloween with a passion - well the trick or treat aspect. Essentially it is just glorified begging. Fair enough if you live ina community where you all know each other and agree to do it for each others kids but I don't agree with knocking on strangers doors.

MidnightAura · 08/10/2018 15:00

My in laws had their windows egged because they ignored the door.

We have ignored our door with no repercussions. We stay in a very quiet area with not many kids it had to be said.

Andtheresaw · 08/10/2018 15:01

No, but I don't mind who gets sweets. We hand out until the lull at about 8.30, then lights go off, most decorations come in, and no-one rings the doorbell. Up until that point if they knock we treat them (but I'm a soft touch and even do soup or coffee for the accompanying Mums in the early evening).

halloweendread · 08/10/2018 15:02

It seems to be an excuse for criminal behaviour, the 31st October.

Don't leave a lit pumpkin out and turn off all lights.

My friend did otherwise and house was egged!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/10/2018 15:03

No never. We live in a nice area though. If you don’t have a lit pumpkin then they should ignore your door anyway.

Charlie97 · 08/10/2018 15:04

I've grown up children now but still leave a pumpkin out and provide sweets to the children.

Never had any repercussions, but it's only teeny children that knock!

halloweendread · 08/10/2018 15:05

Having to hollow out a pumpkin and keep it lit on what possibly could be a wet night, just so people don't attack my house though - seems so OTT!

Or spend all night answering the door, dog barking nonstop, cold air coming in, handing out confectionery all night...hmm...I know I sound like a miserable grump. Don't mind the little kids who've gone to a lot of effort, but the older teens who just want free stuff, well it means all the work's on my side, really!

OP posts:
Andtheresaw · 08/10/2018 15:07

No!
Don't leave a pumpkin unless you want them to knock.
If you have left a pumpkin and they knock then give them treats.
If you have no decs or a pump[kin they shouldn't knock.
Those are the rules!

steppemum · 08/10/2018 15:09

I hate halloween with a passion, and don't give out sweets.

Our house has been egged 2 or 3 times, never sure by who.

But generally the rule is: if you have decorations out, then people can knock for treats, if you don't have decorations out, then people shouldn't knock. So I wouldn't advise leaving out a pumpkin!
We get one or two knocks and I either ignore, or open the door and say - sorry no trick or treats.
It is mostly little kids who knock, and I suspect it is teens who throw the eggs

Jaxhog · 08/10/2018 15:10

In our road, we have a system whereby people agree in advance to be called on. If you want to participate then you do. If you don't, you don't. No egging.

But it's a small road, and we mostly know each other.

Charlie97 · 08/10/2018 15:12

@halloweendread I bought a plastic pumpkin with a bulb in from
Wilkos, I'm not that committed! 😂

Great tip! I didn't even know there was such a thing!

I've had years of eggs being thrown at the door (sweets were always given out!!) but last couple of years been better & no incidents. I think the idea of going to decorated houses is starting to catch on & more organised parties.
Means I now dread Halloween though.
But then I live in a scummy area, but Halloween used to be miserable.
At least it was only eggs, some people used to have criminal damage to cars etc.

QuizzlyBear · 08/10/2018 15:17

Wow, I must be in the minority because in our area we all LOVE Halloween! Plenty of houses go all-out, there are decorations, displays outside, the odd smoke machine going with lights, lots of the home-owners dress up in costume to answer the door and the vast majority of houses give out very generous treats.

I've never EVER heard of any 'tricking' or egging etc in our neighbourhood. If the house hadn't got porch lights or a pumpkin out, nobody knocks there.

I'm planning to put 5-foot giant spiders crawling up our house and a skeleton 'taking tea' in the front garden... 💀

Read that^^

Don’t put a pumpkin out!

halloweendread · 08/10/2018 15:20

Thanks Madame no pumpkin then Smile

Grew up rurally. Never did all this Halloween stuff as a kid, so don't know the rules.

No one eggs houses here. Our neighbourhood has plenty of houses that decorate and enter into the spirit of the occasion. Everyone who goes trick or treating knows the unwritten rule, that if a house is undecorated then you don't knock. Can't wait for this year and to put all my decorations up. Happy Halloween!

Charlie97 · 08/10/2018 15:22

Oh and I've bought ghost lights as well!

bellinisurge · 08/10/2018 15:23

Surely that's why God invented water squirters- to target brats who egg your house.
Ok, I would never do that and pre children of my own adopted a "lights off at front of the house" approach.

PoisonousSmurf · 08/10/2018 15:23

I plan to be out on Halloween. It's normally me who has to dish out the sweets and do all the decorations.
This year I'm as 'scare actor' and will be freaking out the punters in the local Manor's woods.
Much more satisfying Grin

Normandy144 · 08/10/2018 15:24

Quizzly I love your decorations ideas! We put a speaker in the garage to play out spooky music! I may have to get a smoke machine! This year our front garden graveyard will have added bones poking out! Love Halloween too. A great family event.

Topseyt · 08/10/2018 15:28

Ok for you leave out a lit pumpkin then that means you are participating.

Don't leave one out and mostly you won't get people knocking. That isn't a guarantee, there can be dickheads. It is the general rule though.

I hate Halloween. I used to participate when the DDs were small, but no longer thank goodness.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 08/10/2018 15:33

Generally round here there's a ban on under 18's (might be under 16) buying eggs/flour in the local shops in the run up to halloween.

We're in a busy spot for trick or treaters and go all out with the decorations, I did worry one year when we were away on holiday that we might get egged but nothing happened.
