To ask what spirit you use in Christmas cake?

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2018 23:49

First year making Christmas cake and I'm not sure which spirit to use. I'm not eating it so have no preference. I'm on a bit of a budget so cheaper is better!

Thank you!

Thank you.

Making them for a party at my Aunt's care home so I want them to be nice but I can't spend a fortune. I'd never thought of looking in Aldi for booze.

Haha at the puns :)

SeaToSki · 08/10/2018 01:03

Delia Smith's Irish whisky cake is luscious and v easy. You want to soak the fruit for a few weeks before you make the cake though

planetclom · 08/10/2018 01:05

Christmas past

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 08/10/2018 01:31

I used Fireball last year, it was delicious.

MarcieBluebell · 08/10/2018 01:39

Planetclom :)

Brandy and Ameretto alternately

toomuchtooold · 08/10/2018 06:10

Is this about the time to start Christmas cake? What about Christmas pudding? I always think about doing it and then one of the kids gets ill and then by the time they're back at school I've missed my chance.

Cinnamomo · 08/10/2018 06:17

Over the years I have tried brandy, whisky, kirsch and dark rum. They all work well but my favourite is the dark rum.

Thecatisboss · 08/10/2018 06:18

I made my Christmas cake yesterday so it can soak up alcohol. Never made one before so i might be trying the hint about alternative rum and brandy as i think i might have slightly overcooked it.

Thisgirlcant · 08/10/2018 06:20

Brandy.

AuntBeastie · 08/10/2018 06:22

Rum or brandy, usually!

TheGlitterFairy · 08/10/2018 06:25

I use a dry sherry! The fruit is soaked for a few days then the cake is fed with more sherry each week until icing.

JellyBears · 08/10/2018 06:31

My mum uses brandy I think.

fizzyfizz · 08/10/2018 07:29

I use Cointreau (orange liqueur) but tempted to try rum this year

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 08/10/2018 07:32

Rum! Dark rum, always. It adds a lovely deep sweet spiced flavour to the cake.

BiddyPop · 08/10/2018 07:33

The ghost of Christmas future!😂

Cos I keep saying I will make one and never do!

A girl at work makes loads though, and she feeds them with whiskey, if that helps

UrsulaPandress · 08/10/2018 07:34

I soak the fruit in sherry then feed the cake with rum.

Which reminds me, the cake has been in the bottom over overnight. Better go and check it.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 08/10/2018 14:08

Mother & Aunt currently on hols but the cakes will be started next week upon their return. Especially the factory-rate production my aunt manages!

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 08/10/2018 14:12

Amaretto

MulticolourMophead · 08/10/2018 14:38

I soak the fruit for a few days in a mix of brandy and orange juice.

Brandy only because the recipe calls for it. I don't actually drink it, do tempted to use dark rum this year, as I actually drink that.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 08/10/2018 14:39

Sloe gin and plum brandy

MulticolourMophead · 08/10/2018 15:36

OP, I'd say that given the replies, go with what you like, especially if you're going to be eating it!😁

QuestionableMouse · 08/10/2018 21:55

Thanks. I'm not eating it though because I hate fruitcake 😂😂😂

Rum, brandy, port, cherry brandy and Angostura bitters! It's the Delia Creole cake, absolutely lush, in the sense of delicious.
Setting the fruit going this week.
