Missing antenatal appointments?

CheNina · 07/10/2018 22:12

First pregnancy. I had appointments at 9 weeks, 12 week scan, 15 weeks, 20 week scan, 25 weeks, 30 weeks, and my next antenatal appointment isn't until 37 weeks.

I didn't have a 28 week appointment. There was a mix up and my midwife didn't actually turn up to my 25 week appointment so had to rearrange. She said there was no point in me going to the next one as it was so soon so just made me a 30 week appt. This resulted in me not having 28 week bloods and had they not realised this in the hospital I wouldn't have had them until my 30 week appointment.

Looks like I haven't been booked in for a 35 week appointment either, so if I go in to labour at 37 weeks I don't have seen my midwife for 7 weeks. I thought midwife was meant to see you at 35 weeks?

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?

Are you in the uk?
What Are the scheduled appts you should Have?

Starryskiesinthesky · 07/10/2018 22:15

Sounds like you have been seen a lot. If no problems have been identified sounds fine to me.

BrushTheCatEar · 07/10/2018 22:15

Yes it is unacceptable but have you tried to contact them?

CheNina · 07/10/2018 22:16

I've had lots of complications so have seen consultants a lot, but still... aren't these just routine appointments? What reason would my midwife have for not doing them?

This is what is expect for 1st of

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/antenatal-appointment-schedule/

CheNina · 07/10/2018 22:17

@BrushTheCatEar I've only just realised! I was reading the NHS website re when you are meant to have appointments and realised I hadn't been booked in for some.

If you're under consultant and having regular scans you dont really need the midwife. I saw mine twice as it was pointless because I was being checked regularly anyway and there wasn't anything else I needed from her

jasmin93 · 07/10/2018 22:18

In my area (North london) I have to book the midwife appointments myself at the reception desk. There is a schedule in your maternity notes that you should follow.
You really should get your bloods & urine checked regularly to pick up on so maby different things that could harm you & your baby.
Not trying to scare you, but its always good to get all done that is offered.
Good luck xx

if you are seeing consultants then i think those appointments count as a ‘midwife’ appointment. i am consultant led and instead of seeing my midwife for my 28 & 34 week appointment i have just seen the consultant. my next midwife appointment is at 36 weeks. also are you sure you don’t need to book these appointments yourself as i have to?

CheNina · 07/10/2018 22:21

I won't have had a 34/35 week appointment (just not booked in at all) and my 36 week appointment is booked in for when I'm 37 weeks. Also didn't have a 28 week appointment.

I've also noticed in my notes my midwife just keeps saying my hb is 11.9 which is what it was at booking. It's not. My hb is low as has been confirmed by hospital and I haven't had another blood test since. She's just typing in that my hb is normal when actually it's not.

I don't trust this midwife at all!

I've never had to book them myself. My midwife just books my next appointment when I'm there

Ring and ask them to book it you in if you are due an appointment.

happinessiseggshaped · 07/10/2018 22:29

And if you dont trust your midwife, as for a different one.

happinessiseggshaped · 07/10/2018 22:29

ask for a different one

TwistinMyMelon · 07/10/2018 22:31

You get more appointments in first pregnancy than you do in subsequent pregnancies.

Emma765 · 07/10/2018 22:31

If you see your consultant you don't then see the midwife, a lot of the things they'll do are the same.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/10/2018 22:45

Unacceptable?
Consultant appointments plus quite a few midwife appointments.
All for free.
No, I don't think it's unacceptable.
If you would like more, you could go private.

Eemamc · 07/10/2018 23:21

I had to book my own appointments, there’s a page in your notes which shows you when you need appointments, I booked my next appointment after I had one.

BrushTheCatEar · 07/10/2018 23:26

@CheNina you need to phone them tomorrow and ask to speak to someone senior about missed appointments and concerns over the documentation of your hb.

@arethereanyleftatall I don’t think the OP wants more, she just wants what she’s entitled to.

LiquoricePickle · 08/10/2018 00:25

Whilst I think you have plenty of appointments, please don't listen to the poster who said "all for free" - the NHS is free at the point of access, not free, and you have every right to the same appointments as everyone else.

babycatcher411 · 08/10/2018 01:49

If you are having regular appointments at the hospital, which cover these time frames, then you wouldn't need a midwife appointment for the basic care (urine, BP, bloods etc) because the hospital can and should do these.

However you may still need/want the appointments with you community midwife to discuss things like a birth plan, feeding intentions etc.

CatchingBabies · 08/10/2018 02:53

From now you should be seen at 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 weeks. It’s important you are getting the appointments you require, however if you are seeing the consultant at this time you don’t need to also see the midwife as they will just be doubling up the same care. If you don’t have consultant appointments booked for these gestational please contact the midwife and book in yourself.

Tartsamazeballs · 08/10/2018 03:08

All the consultant visits I've been to have been midwife (pee, blood pressure, chat) -> scan -> consultant chat.

Has that been happening with you at all, so you've been seeing A midwife, just not YOUR midwife?
