To worry about eating this

Firstly, I have an anxiety disorder and am aware I can get a bit obsessive about raw meat so I really might be being totally unreasonable to even worry about this at all!

We got a whole chicken delivered today from an online shop and the chicken packaging had a hole in it. They hadn’t packed it in a separate bag so chicken juices got all over everything in the bag, but that’s a separate issue.

Is it still ok to eat the chicken? As it arrived with a hole in it, I’ve no idea how long it’s been there for, or what impact this has on its shelf life? Is it totally fine and I don’t need to worry?

No I wouldn't

MeredithGrey1 · 07/10/2018 17:43

Wouldn’t worry, or wouldn’t eat?

No I wouldn't eat it, would be asking for a refund as the packaging was damaged.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 07/10/2018 17:45

I wouldn't eat it. And id ask for a refund.

florenceheadache · 07/10/2018 17:45

Your whole order is wasted, call and ask for a full replacement.

Thesmallthings · 07/10/2018 17:47

Ask for a replacement if all that was in the bags x

Thatstheendofmytether · 07/10/2018 17:47

I wouldn't eat it or anything that was in the bag with it. Infact I wpuld have prob chucked the whole bag in the bin, but then I'm funny about chicken. Ask for a refund.

Whitecurrants · 07/10/2018 17:48

If juices leaked into the bag it sounds as though the hole was probably made during the picking/packing/delivery process so very recently. If the chicken looks and smells OK inside the bag I would eat it (you are going to cook it after all), but you could also report the damaged packaging (chicken and whatever it leaked on) to the delivery company.

Bestseller · 07/10/2018 17:48

I'm not usually precious about food and would eat it if it looked OK and was a day or two out of date for example, but not this. I'd be asking for a refund on the whole shop

BingerGeer · 07/10/2018 17:48

I would cook and eat the chicken and rinse everything else in the bag that it had leaked on before the other stuff went in the fridge / cupboard. Anything I couldn’t rinse or cook straight away, I would chuck.

Omzlas · 07/10/2018 17:52

I'm not normally bothered about food (in this context) but chicken juice makes me feel icky

I'd be contacting the company, with photos etc, and asking what they intend to do about it

pigsDOfly · 07/10/2018 17:53

As pps have said I too would be asking for a refund on the whole order. You really don't want chicken juice all over other foods; hence the advice to keep raw meat on the bottom shelf of the fridge.

If you're an anxious type of person don't eat it. You'll spend the whole evening worrying about having eaten it and the effect it might have on you.

Tika77 · 07/10/2018 18:03

I’d ear it if it smells ok but phone them asking for a refund on everything that chicken juice got on. I’m more worried about the chicken contaminating things.

MeredithGrey1 · 07/10/2018 18:07

Ok thanks, good to know I wasn’t totally overreacting. The other things in the bag were a couple of cartons of juice and one of milk (so were quite easy to wash) I just put them in the sink and rinsed them with a soapy cloth. If it had been anything with porous packaging, or just loose I’d have thrown it.

We have asked for a refund though, it was a whole chicken and was meant for dinner tonight and leftovers for lunches during the week so not convenient to have to chuck it out.

Surely if it's cooked all the way through you won't have anything to worry about?

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/10/2018 18:13

I would have eaten the chicken on the grounds that most of the nasties arrive with the chicken in the first place, and it's going to be cooked, but I would have washed well any tins and packets in the order and thrown away anything where there was a possibility of the chicken having leaked on to food (eg veg in paper bags), or anything not washable (eg boxes of tissues).

But if you have any worries, chicken is one of the foods where you take those worries seriously, so I wouldn't advise anyone else to eat the chicken.

Daftasabroom · 07/10/2018 19:53

Chicken will probably be fine, give it a sniff, if it's off you will absolutely know about it. Cook properly as normal.

guiltynetter · 07/10/2018 20:02

i definitely wouldn’t eat it.

ToadOfSadness · 07/10/2018 22:12

People have survived for many years before chickens were packed in plastic. Butchers used to use white paper and none of my friends, family or neighbours died from it. As long as it smells OK and is cooked properly it will be fine.

As for the chicken juice, a product of plastic packaging where it leaks out into the packaging but can't normally escape, it washes off. Think about the other things that the rest of the shopping has been in contact with, mouse wee, dust, floors, shelving, plastic pallet things that have been on floors etc. Just give it a wash, there is too much waste. If you can't bear to use it, and it is OK to give to a food bank then do that, someone would be grateful for it.
