to think we should just ban this crap

The world is full of plastic waste and yet we still produce and import this shit to put in party bags. Ds was at a party today with 30 kids, so I assume 30 pieces of plastic crap. It doesn't even work. I bet 28 of them are lost, broken or in the bin by the end of the week.
AIBU in thinking we should ban it all? No-one's life is going to be hugely affected by not being able to buy this any more.

Paper straws are rubbish to be fair!

Nandocushion · 07/10/2018 18:31

Instead of gift bags we did $5 gift cards to the locally-owned ice cream shop. Huge hit with everyone.

@Questionable
I know McDonalds are trying and the speed with which they switched to paper straws was impressive for such a big company. In this thread I was just pointing out the irony of pushing a paper straw through a plastic lid. I wasn't trying to bash McDonalds, it was just something that occurred to me. I guess the plastic lids are needed to provide rigidity and reduce spills but presumably someone somewhere is looking at non-plastic alternatives?

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2018 22:59

You said 'there's so much more than they could be doing'. I was pointing out how much they do currently, much more than any other company in the UK.

The plastic lids help to prevent spills and they're also easy to put on. When you have hundreds of drinks going out per hour speed is important. I'm sure they'll change to something else when it's realistic.

Blimey, that's quite a claim! But certainly in terms of fast food companies McDonalds are trying, the paper straws thing is excellent proof of this. But even you admit that the plastic lids will be replaced at some point. Then of course there's the plastic cutlery ... (dons hard hat)

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2018 23:11

Did you even read my other post? I genuinely can't think of another UK company who does all the things McDonald's does. It's not just paper straws.

AlphaBravo · 07/10/2018 23:13

@questionablemouse Iceland are pretty high up there too

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2018 23:15

Yes, they're doing well too. They do much more than the other supermarkets.

BrickByBrick · 07/10/2018 23:29

We were in mcd's the other day, as i pushed my rationed straw into my cup which i later put in the recycling bin I did stop and wonder about the 2 happy meal toys in front of me.

I often do notebooks, pens etc. I did Easter eggs one year, worked ok but they were for a 10th birthday.

So much of ours ends in the bin. Anything that blows and makes a noise has to go straight away as ds (asd) really can't cope with it.

Boyskeepswinging · 08/10/2018 09:01

@Questionable I did read your post. I agree they are making great strides but all I did was point out the irony of sticking a paper straw through a plastic lid.
