To eat raw broccoli?

I just tried sone raw broccoli for the first time and it was amazing! Like sweet peas but nuttier. Does anyone eat raw broccoli regularly? Is it harmful?

I normally shred some to go on salads or have some with hummus and other dips.

BillywigSting · 07/10/2018 13:16

Yeah broccoli is fine raw. In fact possibly even slightly better for you (more nutrients that don't get zapped by cooking).

I really like almost raw broccoli though for preference. Dunked in hot water so it goes dark green but still very crunchy and sweet and nutty.

Delicious! (especially tender stem. That is my absolute favourite veggie ever)

1000antsinmypants · 07/10/2018 13:16

This salad is lovely -
250 grams broccoli florets
1 red capsicum quartered
1 apple quartered
30 grams pine nuts
25 grams olive oil
15 grams white balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon honey
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon herb salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Chuck it all in a blender and done. (Not for too long!)

SequinsOnEverything · 07/10/2018 13:17

I have it with hummus.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 07/10/2018 13:18

I can't see why it would be harmful. I like it as part of a huge mixed salad with salad leaves, raw mushroom, avocado, cherry tomatoes, raw courgette slices, bits of nice crisp red/yellow/orange pepper and prawns or chicken breast, liberally dressed with good olive oil and either wine vinegar or balsamic or a little lemon juice. Plenty of salt and pepper too. Lovely. Walnuts go well with it too.

BillywigSting · 07/10/2018 13:20

1000ants that sounds divine, going to try that tomorrow Grin

Andro · 07/10/2018 13:23

I've been eating raw broccoli for years (and most other veg for that matter...)

NannyR · 07/10/2018 13:23

I always save the stalk when I'm cooking broccoli, peel it and slice into coins -delicious to snack on. I'm not as keen on the head part raw though.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/10/2018 13:26

Ooh I love broccoli stalks, cut off the outside hard part and it's delicious!

ButDoYouAvocado · 07/10/2018 13:27

Its my go to 'filth' snack as i dunk it in mayonnaise which i suspect cancel out any health benefits Grin

JurassicGirl · 07/10/2018 13:31

I love the stalk raw, I peal the outside & cut into sticks - really lovely!

Also love slices of raw courgette Smile

GreyGardens88 · 07/10/2018 13:32

Not as nice as a chocolate orange though is it

BillywigSting · 07/10/2018 14:43

No it's loads nicer than chocolate orange. Chocolate orange is too sweet and all greasy now (and I say this as a full blown fatty with a bmi in the obese range)

ShadyLady53 · 07/10/2018 15:07

I used to love a raw broccoli salad made with bacon, sultanas and walnuts with a tiny bit of creamy dressing. However, raw cruciferous vegetables like broccoli contain goitrogens and are very harmful for those with an under active thyroid so I no longer eat broccoli raw.

tshirtsuntan · 07/10/2018 15:10

It's dangerous for my family as it makes me emit noisy, poisonous clouds of gas...

JovialNickname · 07/10/2018 16:47

If you think raw broccoli is nice, try eating raw fresh parsley.... it's addictive in its deliciousness

tillytrotter1 · 07/10/2018 19:21

Raw cauliflower is also delicious, a totally different flavour from the cooked stuff.
In the 80s there was quite a fad for raw food, there was a book on the subject.

TriciaMcMillan · 07/10/2018 19:51

Another vote for broccoli stalk being my secret mid cooking snack. In fact if I'm not doing the cooking, DH will message me from the kitchen to let me know he's put it to one side for me to have a stalky treat before supper! He's a keeper!😜

CherryPavlova · 07/10/2018 20:04

Broccoli is my least favourite vegetable when cooked. I love it raw.

user1471592953 · 07/10/2018 20:08

Can’t believe my first ever post is to warn OP that some people are akin to poisoned by raw broccoli (I am one). It is a cruciferous vegetable and contains an enzyme that can be hard to digest, which leads to a (very, in my case) bad reaction. Proceed with caution.

Whereismumhiding2 · 07/10/2018 20:31

We eat raw broccoli (as well as lightly steamed), have done so for 8+ years, and raw peppers (sweet and normal), raw cauliflower, carrots. Sometimes on their own or sometimes dipped in e.g. hummus.
It's yummy.

Shadow1234 · 07/10/2018 20:35

Raw broccoli and raw cauliflower - definitely a yes. (with a few added raw carrots - my ideal salad 😄

MulderitsmeX · 07/10/2018 20:45

It makes me so windy raw Sad

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 07/10/2018 20:50

raw is far nice than cooked! Especially dipped in tartare sauce. Yum x

Calphurnia · 07/10/2018 20:53

Me: raw broccoli & hummus is lush
My IBS: get to fuck though
