To wonder why the government can’t do anything about all the plastic tat for kids

Kinder egg crap, mash’ums, lol dolls, squishies, all these blind bag nonsenses, the list could go and on. It just seems so bizarre that In the current crisis, these companies are allowed to sell such shit and for such extortionate prices. My DD always wants this sort of stuff but I just can’t anymore and she thinks it’s so unfair of course. They talk of supermarkets and carriers and coffee shops and cups but I’ve never seen any conversation around children’s toys which I think by far is the worst for plastic consumption

Why can't magazines and fast food places offer a loyalty scheme? Collect tokens with each purchase and register the token codes online to choose a toy/book? Kids love collecting things and it will probably add more value for the child knowing that they have 'saved for it'.
McD's et al should be happy as it encourages repeat business.
Maybe the toys won't be seen as cheap / disposable and could be made from better materials.

It makes me so angry..

The only way to stop this tide of shit is to legislate against it - because you see shitty attitudes on here all the time.. "if you don't like it, don't buy it" "lol, I feel sorry for your kids" "its not single use, my DD played with it for at least ten minutes"

It's not about LIKING it or not - it's about saving the fucking planet from the fucking morons ..

florafawna · 25/10/2018 15:31

Government need to care first!

Scortja here here

It would be less of an issue if the toys were slightly better quality and less breakable. Not everyone can afford to pay a fortune for toys so that needs taking into account to a degree as well- not everyone has decent charity shops near them so that's not always an alternative.

Though being broke makes saying no easier sometimes, there's simply no option.

RangeRider · 25/10/2018 16:32

Best bet would be to write to magazines and tell them you won’t buy their titles because of the plastic nightmare. The more that do, the more they’re likely to listen because they’re worried about losing £££.
Exactly. Stop expecting the government to take responsibility for everything in your life and do it yourself. Don't buy the crap & contact the manufacturers explaining why you won't buy the stuff. Encourage friends & family to do the same & then the companies will change their ways.

RangeRider · 25/10/2018 16:35

There are some beautiful wooden toys online that I have suggested for Xmas and birthdays when people ask what DD would like, but it is never bought for her.
The government is responsible IMO,
The government is persuading your family etc. to buy crap? No? Then they're not responsible. YOU need to say that you won't accept any more crap. Explain to them why, then they might make changes to their own lives as well as not filling your home with junk.

scortja · 25/10/2018 16:37

But EVERYONE needs to stop - not just those who actually think about it and actually care..

paintinmyhairAgain · 25/10/2018 16:44

who is buying it to start with ? people with money ? that's very unlikely to be the kids themselves, no one is MAKING you buy it after all. say no occasionally to your dc, don't buy it then you don't need to moan about it.

Misty9 · 25/10/2018 16:58

Ime kids magazines cost MORE through subscription due to postage costs. A lot more. There are some subscription only ones which look good though for older kids - ads are always on Facebook.

I've told my dc that we don't buy kinder eggs anymore as the plastic is bad for the planet. I'll buy them a kinder bar or whatever instead but no plastic tat. Wrt wooden toys, we've bought some lovely ones over the years but dc are way more interested in the plastic noisy stuff. It's a work in progress...

Misty9 · 25/10/2018 17:00

And I've given the happy meal toy back to staff before to be used for someone else (before dc see it of course)

GadsdenFlag · 25/10/2018 17:00

I don't think it's the place of government to interfere with enterprise

PawneeParksDept · 25/10/2018 17:03

Totally agree with everyone here, it's gone too far. But also wanted to agree with @JacquesHammer - charity shops will take unwanted plastic tat and sell it on. Worth everyone here having a good tat declutter 😄

greendale17 · 25/10/2018 17:05

Adult plastic tat is a far bigger issue
