To give FIL a year old Christmas cake?

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 05/10/2018 21:16

Hear me out.

Last year I made 2 Christmas cakes, one for me and one for FIL. Gave FIL his. He ate it within a week.

I realised I was getting fat so didn't bother cutting into ours. I had a slice of FIL's and that was enough. DH isn't fussed for Christmas cake, so it stayed in the cupboard.

Now it got to April and I though, shall I chuck it. But never did.

Aibu to give FIL the one from last year? It smells OK. Will it be rancid? Or do I crack on and make him a fresh one? (will not make 2 this year, we're going abroad and I'm still plump )

Um, how much booze did you put in it? I suppose you’re in theory able to save a tier of wedding cake for a christening.

occasionalalice · 05/10/2018 21:21

Are tiers of wedding cakes not frozen for the christening?
I didn’t think anyone just left them in a cupboard, could be wrong though.

occasionalalice · 05/10/2018 21:21

Op if go fresh one personally. If he gets a bad stomach (related or not) you will feel awful.

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 05/10/2018 21:23

A good amount of glefiddich. I made it last October and watered it biweekly (until Christmas. It hasn't had a drop since)

It has been stored wrapped up, in a tin, in the dark.

Tiers of wedding cakes weren't frozen for the christening since the tradition dates back to before people had freezers.

I don't see why it shouldn't be OK, but if you're worried, cut it in half, cut a thin slice the length of one half for testing, and if it's OK, you can push the two halves back together and it won't be so obvious you've taken a bit.

CMOTDibbler · 05/10/2018 21:29

It'll be fine. I made a friends wedding cake and they decided to keep the top tier. I didn't realise that they just clingfilmed over the iced cake and its board and stuck it in a cupboard!
3 years later I was asked to reice it for their dds christening - I stripped off the icing and marzipan and it was fine. Just gave it some more brandy and it tasted great

CoughLaughFart · 05/10/2018 21:35

Isn’t the whole point of Christmas cakes that they outlast polystyrene?

Stinkbomb · 05/10/2018 21:35

My DSis kept the top tier of her wedding cake (not frozen) for a couple of years for her DD1 christening - it needed re-icing though.

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 05/10/2018 21:35

Hmm, thought you'd all cry no!

I'll eat it if he wont!

GreenMeerkat · 05/10/2018 21:37

I used our top tier of wedding cake for DDs christening 2 years later.

Was absolutely fine as long as it's been stored in an airtight container

needsahouseboy · 05/10/2018 21:40

My christmas cake will be three years old this year. I've forgotten to ice for the past 2 years. Its heavily wrapped in clingfilm and booze filled. It'll be fine

EmilyRosiEl · 05/10/2018 21:41

Definitely don't give it to him!!!

It's likely that the eggs will give him food poisoning, which can be fatal for older adults.

If you do give it to him you have to tell him it's a year old because it's really not fair for him to not know about it.

Wedding cakes are supposed to be frozen bfore they're used for a Christening.

MsVestibule · 05/10/2018 21:44

It's likely that the eggs will give him food poisoning

Absolute rubbish! Do you not cook your Christmas cakes?!!

EmilyRosiEl · 05/10/2018 21:47

Found this on a food safety website:

To give FIL a year old Christmas cake?
SleightOfMind · 05/10/2018 21:48

We made our wedding cake and had the top bit after DD was born 3 yrs later.

Wrapped in cling in a dark cool cupboard.

Also. Do make two again this year and I’ll buy one from you! Wink

Budgieinaberet · 05/10/2018 21:48

Do Not give it to him. He will become ill and die.
Unless you would like to get an inheritance early

The best solution is to send it to me.

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 05/10/2018 21:49

There is no need to freeze fruit cakes (or Christmas puddings). They improve with maturing for a year or two. Just strip off the marzipan and icing, dose it up with more brandy and then re-cover.

He will not get food poisoning.

moreismore · 05/10/2018 21:50

It will be fine! You’ll need fresh marzipan and icing tho (I’ve done it with wedding cake. We lived)

EmilyRosiEl · 05/10/2018 21:50

Cooked eggs and meat go off to MsVestibule- they're high in protein so the perfect environment for bacteria.

According to lots of food safety websites un-iced fruit cake can be kept for 1 month in a cupboard/pantry, six months in the fridge and only in the freezer can it be kept for a whole year.

I think if someone chooses to eat year old food then that's up to them but that it's not fair to give it to other people without letting them know.

Celebelly · 05/10/2018 21:50

I would (assuming you were generous with the booze!). If it's off then it will taste so anyway.

EmilyRosiEl · 05/10/2018 21:50

** go off too, not to

greenlynx · 05/10/2018 21:52

I wouldn’t!

dinosaurkisses · 05/10/2018 21:52

Give him the option- if he’d like to rub the gamut of year old Christmas cake then that’s up to him!

I’m not a fan of fruit cakes but I saw on a similar thread that a cake younger that six months wasn’t worth the hassle, so it might have aged to perfection!

reallybadidea · 05/10/2018 21:57

Fruitcake might be ok for up to 25 years
