AIBU?
To think that this scene from the Firth/Ehle P&P adaptation is one of the best TV moments?
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 13:19
On maternity leave and just rewatched the first proposal scene from the BBC Pride and Prejudice adaptation (on iPlayer at the moment).
It may be over 20 years old, as the sound and colour quality date it slightly, but it just is perfect TV...
AIBU?
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 13:26
That treat is for later this afternoon...
Fi1982 · 05/10/2018 13:30
YABU Colin’s floating head at the carriage window after Lizzie’s trip to Pemberley is clearly best.
Closely followed by sexually charged glances over Georgiana’s oblivious head as she plays dirgey piano. Or maybe Wickham lounging half dressed in a chair with some young hussy while Col looks on in disgust.
So many to choose from!
Magliarosa · 05/10/2018 13:32
The lake scene is very good but my favourite moment has always been the scene later on where they're at Pemberley for the evening. Elisabeth turning the pages for Miss Darcy, Miss Bingley makes a sarcastic comment about Wickham but Elisabeth manages smooths it over, the look Elisabeth and Darcy exchange after that gets me all of a flutter!
Magliarosa · 05/10/2018 13:33
X-post with Fi1982 who describes it without waffling as much!
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 13:37
You see I was going to turn this off and do something productive (aren’t I supposed to be nesting now?) but now you make me want to have it on all afternoon...
ElizabethDarcy88 · 05/10/2018 13:44
I just think it's the best version ever and can not be improved. I have to agree that it is a very good scene but my personal favourite is the pemberley scene with the piano. My saddest almost follows as it the scene in the parlor of the inn where she's telling him about Lydia and he leaves her and her heartbreak is shown as she realises she loves him.
flyingspaghettimonster · 05/10/2018 13:44
YABU. That adaptation of P & P was the worst thing ever made. None of the characters fit properly and the lake scene was so stupidly out of character and oh god her smirk mad end want to break the telly. I just cannot see one single good thing about that version.
I repeatedly watch the older version with Elizabeth Garvie. So much better casting, especially Mrs. Bennett.
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 13:45
“In essentials I believe he is very much as he ever was...” Lizzie warns Wickham...
EyeDrops · 05/10/2018 13:52
Agree with others re the Pemberly piano scene. Gives me all sorts of flutters.
Also Darcy looking all dishevelled while he writes to her. Urghhh I adore Colin Firth.
BluePigeon · 05/10/2018 13:56
I love this version. There are so many brilliant moments but I do have a gripe in that I've no idea why Darcy thought Elizabeth was in love with him, enough that he'd propose the first time, because all she ever did was scowl at him and spit barbed comments out.
But still hundred times better than the 2005 version, where everyone speaks really fast and lines are given to the wrong characters. And Kiera Knightly.
Magliarosa · 05/10/2018 13:57
DP is away this weekend, think my TV viewing is now sorted!!
I've never seen that version flyingspaghettimonster, will have to take a look. I do love this adaptation, thought it was very true to the book in the most part. I know they added a few extra scenes but they worked IMHO. I thought Mrs Bennett was a bit too shrill at first but the more I've seen it the more it works. Lady Catherine was brilliant and they got the casting of Mr Collins spot on!
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 13:58
I’ve got to the lake scene (who needs a tidy house for a new baby anyway?). I have to admit it doesn’t really do that much for me. I prefer my men less... wet?
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 14:00
Oh but the awkwardness... at the meeting
(Think he has aged magnificently...)
Magliarosa · 05/10/2018 14:05
Unicorn, baby definitely won't notice the tidiness of the house! If this is your first then take every opportunity to sit with your feet up and relax while you can!
The lake scene never really did much for me either. He has aged well, one of those actors you really hope is as nice in real life!
NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 05/10/2018 14:08
It’s my third. I have an hour before the school and nursery run, due date is Monday, this could be my selfish last hour to myself for years... #snugglesuponsofa
Orlandointhewilderness · 05/10/2018 14:12
oh i adore this. I watched it on tv when i was 11 and it was the first time i think i was every aware that there were men that looked good! i recently rewatched it with my 7 year old dd who loved it as well. it has aged so well i think!
Spreadingcudweed · 05/10/2018 14:14
I agree!
So of everyone in the UK who can access it on BBC iPlayer! Enjoy!
TheKitchenWitch · 05/10/2018 14:20
Ooooh I'd forgotten I have this on DVD. Time for a rewatch I think. It's television perfection.
Argonauts · 05/10/2018 14:23
I like the older BBC Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul version, though admittedly the sets are so flimsy that walls wobble when characters pass through doors, and compared to the Ehle/Firth one, it looks as if it was made for about a fiver.
I think my problem with the Ehle/Firth one is that I don't fancy Colin Firth at all, and chiefly imagine him stinking of pondweed in the lake scene -- and the casting director clearly decided to cast Wickham and Bingley (both of whom are supposed to be good-looking, and Wickham is charming enough to genuinely turn Lizzie's head) so as not to detract attention from Colin Firth.
Ditto the female casting -- Jane is supposed to be far more conventionally beautiful than Lizzie, but although Susannah Harker is very pretty in real life, the hairstyle and costumes didn't suit her face/body type, and she looked much less pretty than Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie.
That was one of the few things the Joe Wright/Kiera Knightley version got right, I thought, by having Rosamund Pyke as Jane. Though she was not particularly believable as Kiera Knightley's sister...
JellyBears · 05/10/2018 14:28
I watch this probably once a year since it came out in 1995 :D
FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 05/10/2018 14:39
I think Susannah Harker is perfect as Jane, she is just the epitome of regency beauty.
TeaStory · 05/10/2018 14:46
I do have a gripe in that I've no idea why Darcy thought Elizabeth was in love with him, enough that he'd propose the first time, because all she ever did was scowl at him and spit barbed comments out.
I think he thought so well of himself that he assumed she’d be honoured to attract such a man and wouldn’t dream of refusing him. He clearly didn’t know her very well at that point!
