Blush

I have a problem.

For the past 6 weeks I have been severely constipated. Prior to this I was regular but historically there have been periods where I've only pooed once a week. When I say severe constipation I mean pebbles once every 3 days and twice an impaction that I did clear but the size was just Shock
I also have internal piles. Every time I do go, it's painful pebbles and then painful piles.

I have tried:

  • taking magnesium
  • taking hemp seed oil
  • eating chia seeds
  • eating high fiber fruits such as pears and apples
-drinking coffee
  • natural laxatives

Things work for 3-4 days then, even though I continue to eat/take supplements I get backed up again. I am drinking a minimum of 64oz of water and exercising 4 times a week with yoga an additional 2.

I'm too scared to go to the dr. Partly because I'm worried it's something serious and partly because it's too embarrassing. Should I be worried? What else can I change diet wise??

I get terribly constipated unless I have 2 big oranges a day. So much so if dh does the big shop and forgets I start feeling panicked as I know what will happen. This works - I have watery cordial all day too but not lots.

@Believeitornot chia seeds are actually a brilliant source of fiber and not contributing to the problem. The problem was there before I started consuming chia seeds and got a little better once I started (and then stopped working but didn't make things worse IYSWIM). Just don't want anyone having the same issue to think chia seeds aren't good. They are a soluble fiber which is good, provided you are drinking enough and consuming them correctly. I'm not eating them daily, as I've introduced high fiber muffins for breakfast to change things up a bit. Not that they're working much either...Confused BUT I got a fiber supplement today and the lactulose took effect very quickly surprisingly so here's hoping things are sorted from here. Thank you again for all the advice, I learned a lot!

Water. Regular drinking every day. Our DD has a tendency towards this and long term the cure is water. That and not putting off having a poo when you need one (DD used to put it off at school because older girls took the piss if they heard someone pooing)

Believeitornot · 11/10/2018 08:04

Ok thanks OP, just wondered as DH eats a lot of them!

I find running and not eating too much specifically high fibre stuff helps - better for me to eat fruit and vegs, plus pulses and less alcohol

I hope the doctors help resolve the issue for you!

I’ve not read the full thread but have you tried prune juice (good quality one, Asda’s just doesn’t work for me. Half pint early evening, don’t plan on going out!
Then ongoing a tablespoon or two of linseeds, either stored into a yogurt or whizzed up in a smoothie (they don’t need to be whole) then lots of water...they soak it up. And an orange every day. Avoid bran

Stirred not stored

Not Rtft as in a rush but personal experience lactose never worked for me.

Movicol can be bought over the counter and is fantastic, your body also can't become reliant on it

Hth

MrsHopity · 11/10/2018 09:10

Sorry RFT now and saw you have tried movicol. Ignore my previous advice and Im glad you saw the GP x

Doonewanker · 11/10/2018 09:57

I know it's a terrible thing to suggest and pls don't take me up on it, but having a fag and a black coffee would get you going straight away. SmileWink

My GP advised that apples are not good for constipation! My daughter was 3 when her issues with constipation began. After a year of bouts of constipation she began withholding her poo. Movicol got her going again and she had a massive clear out for days. Now I give her prunes for breakfast everyday. She is only allowed 1 banana a week and 1 apple. Grapes are also bad for constipation. Seeds are a big no no they make things so much worse and actually can cause bowel blockages if you have a slow digestive system. Dried fruit is good and lots of green leafy vegetables. Lots of water and be careful about dairy. Too much yogurt and cheese and milk adds to constipation problems. In fact avoid yogurt altogether and only small amounts of cheese.

Drink Kefir daily. Tesco sell a 1ltr carton (Polish brand) for around £1.40
