...to think it's so hard to change careers?

To preface: not a mum, but I love reading AIBU so thought I'd ask you all for some advice/a kick up the bum. I'm 23 and work as an administrator in central London. The organisation I work in is good but not my cup of tea - and having thought about it a bit, I would love to explore roles either in Diversity & Inclusion or in a more creative space (arts production, for example).

However.

I have no spare cash or time for training or a postgraduate degree. My job won't allow me to shadow people in other departments. And I'm bloody scared of putting myself out there! AIBU to think I'll be an administrator forever?!

I disagree. I went from 8 years in retail to a civil service job easy. No retraining. Just applied, interviewed and was successful.

Retraining is rarely actually needed in my experience. Training tends to be on the job

What sector do you work in at the moment? Could you find an admin job in a more creative industry with a view to eventually moving out of admin and into another area within that company? Some companies are a lot better at training and development than others.

I sympathise because it can seem hopeless sometimes. I also work in admin so know how you feel!

I've just changed career shortly after returning from maternity leave. I just applied for an entry level job that will provide the training and qualifications I need and that was it

Oddly I think I felt more stuck in a career path when I was in one rather than when in between jobs iyswim. I don't think it is in fact that hard.

How frustrating! Of course it is possible to change careers, I have! But it is really hard to know where to start and it can feel like you'll never make it when you are in the middle of it.

For inclusion and diversity stuff could you make a start by reading up, following people and groups on Social media, maybe write a blog post or something yourself?

You say you don't have time for training or a post graduate course, what about some volunteering or charity fundraising for a diversity type organisation or art gallery etc?
You will get to know people and have something to show on your cv/talk about at interviews

I also like the pp suggestion of looking at admin roles in different organisations, sideways steps towards what you want!

Where are you all finding these entry level jobs that offer training? I tend to look on Indeed, but most entry level jobs I see on there are actually apprenticeships which won't cover my bills.
