Midwife?
I'm 25 I have two small kids currently a SAHM, but now my children are going into nursery I want to become a midwife...

Except I have no idea where to start?
I had quite a few good GCSES, went to college graduated in other things. Then married then kids .. However nothing to do with this career choice at all.
Please literally give me a step by step guide on what qualifications I need, where I can even start because I'm being told I can do an access course with a college to get into a uni and go from there, to then being told something completely different. Please help me somebody!.

I did an access to nursing course at your age, it was 12 years ago though so it might have changed? Fairly easy to do ( I was a SP with a toddler) and just one day a week at college

Actually just reread your OP, did you get A-C's in your GCSE's? If so you may not need the access course

I have experience advising on stuff like this. When you say you went to college and graduated in other things, can you be specific about what qualifications you already have and what kind of experience (even if not directly relevant)

MuddlingThroughMidwifeMum · 03/10/2018 21:16

Hi.

Most Universities want to GCSE's at A-C, these must include Maths and English Language, and most (but not all, you will need to check the uni's your applying to) ask for Biology too. If you have those already then you would need to do an Access course next.

Also it would be advisable to secure yourself some volunteering experience in a related area to show your transferrable skills in a Personal Statement.

Read everything you can get your hands on, and consider signing up to a midwifery journal to keep up to date with current topics. Maybe look for some of the student midwife groups on Facebook too as these can be a mine of information for those at the start of their journey. Secret community for student midwives is quite a supportive environment, or birthrights UK is a mix of parents/professionals.

Good luck in journey and remember everyone started somewhere.

Midwifery is fairly competitive.

Look up the degree courses and check the requirements. Speak to your nearest provider etc.

Not sure if there is a science based access to university course that you could do?

RandomMess · 03/10/2018 21:32

Perhaps do a biology A level at night school to boost your existing qualifications?

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/10/2018 21:37

Your first step would be to find your certificates and look up the entry requirements on the university website.
You can either train as a midwife, or train as a nurse and then do an additional midwifery conversion course.
Midwifery is competitive, and you need to be able to work shifts including nights during your training (placements are usually in blocks of 6-12 weeks, depends on the uni though).
