To ask what I should do?

Have name changed for this as asked a few people but been mostly a lurker for a while. It's a weird situation and explaining will be long and I'm not sure what to do.

My mum died 3 years ago, the anniversary date was only a couple of weeks ago. Last week I received a parcel in her name to my address (she lived here when died) it was from amazon. I turned it away and explained to the driver the reason why.

I then had a phone call from the delivery company yesterday as they got my number from something I'd ordered. The women explained that in the week they had 6 more parcels that they had kept and sent back due to the name and what I'd explained to driver. They had another turn up that was on the way to be delivered. She explained that they had tried to talk to amazon but amazon would not discuss at all with them.

So another parcel turned up and I accepted it to get sender details and everything else. I called amazon myself and explained the situation, it took a little while for them to understand. I wanted to know who was sending them but they won't discuss anything with me as not the account holder, I explained that my mum had died 3 years ago so couldn't talk to her but due to data protection they wouldn't discuss anything still.

I have just returned from the school run and have another parcel. It has all completely messed with my head, the parcels have her full name including middle initials, her old mobile number, they are all books that she might have read or children's books (I have 3 DC) but the invoices inside parcels are in US dollars.

So in a week there had been at least 8 order to my address. No one I have spoken to can help or suggest what I should do, some saying take in or send back. It's all making me feel sick. AIBU to ask for some advice or ideas on how I can find out what the hell is going on?

How weird. And distressing.
I think I'd write to Amazon's UK registered office and explain everything you've said here. Ask them to cancel her account and to write to you letting you know that they've done so.
Or maybe ask CAB what they can suggest?

Can you send a copy of the death certificate in order for someone at Amazon to be able to speak to you?

Data protection only covers living individuals so doesn’t apply to the deceased - though of course Amazon are saying that they don’t know (officially) of the death, so a copy of the certificate may allow them to talk to you?

unsurewhatisgoingon · 03/10/2018 16:22

Thanks for replies. Who I spoke to at amazon didn't mention sending death certificate, I don't have but can get. They just said to refuse the parcels and will hopefully stop it.

I'm concerned about who is ordering and sending, especially as had her middle initials that not many people knew. Also as they are books, she loved to read and these are ones I could imagine her buying. I also know she didn't really order online as preferred using cash. Unfortunately I don't know if it's a new account or one she had before she passed, only person who could possibly know was my stepdad but I have no contact with since the funeral.

Is it possible she had a wishlist on amazon? And someone is now clicking on her list and buying things for her which she had previously selected?

Have a search on here:
Amazon find a wishlist - I think you need to be logged in.

I wonder if she had signed up to one of these 'chain' letter type things - there was one going round a while back for books as I recall - the idea being you added your address details etc to the list, sent a book to the name at the top of the list and then forwarded it on to 10 of your friends. (I completely ignored it when it came my way, but I know people who swore it worked in getting books sent). I'm just wondering if its somehow taken this long for her name to get to the top of the list?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2500967-To-think-that-people-who-fall-for-this-36-free-books-thing-are-daft Looks like it was going around in 2015, so the timing would work.

BuntyII · 03/10/2018 16:35

You can pre order books on Amazon, I wonder how they are being paid for though?

unsurewhatisgoingon · 03/10/2018 16:43

Can't find a wish list under her name. I can't imagine her signing up to the book scheme but could be a possibility.

I did think preorder but it's been 3 years and the book that came yesterday stated it had just been published, date printed was the same as on the invoice. I've had no other post for her since she passed apart from holiday brochure which I imagine is just a mailing list.

I'm just so confused by it all

I’m really sorry OP but it could be anyone. I know I’ve ordered things for my sister & just had Amazon deliver to her address and in her name from my account, without her knowledge or permission (surprise gifts, nothing weird). So anyone who knows her name & your address could be sending them.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 03/10/2018 17:50

Could it be books that have been out of print and were on backorder, or are they new books? If on backorder they will be sent out automatically once they are reprinted.

Whatever the reason, you need to get Amazon to realise they can discuss this with you as long as you can provide proof your mum died. (Anyone can say that someone has died and they are sorting out their affairs so you usually need to provide death cert. etc as proof you are not lying.) Amazon need to check the account they are being sent out via asap and check nothing fraudulent is happening, or cancel all orders and close the account so this stops happening.

Of course they can do it, if they refuse you might need to be direct and tell them they can do it and to stop messing you about telling you they can't. Just be direct with them if you need to, if there is anything untoward going on make it clear to them that if they don't sort it they will just have more to sort out later and might lose money if they refuse.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 03/10/2018 18:08

The agent you speak to won't be familiar with the process needed for you to access the account. It should have been escalated.
If you can, email [email protected] which will bypass the agents and someone will contact you to tell you what's needed. They will sort this.
