AIBU to still keep eating bacon?

Over the years now I feel like I've heard so much don't do this don't do that and today it's the bacon/breast cancer link. But I do enjoy a bacon sarnie maybe once a week/once a fortnight. Although now of course it won't be quite as enjoyable as before with the added health guilt/worry Sad

For context I don't smoke, don't drink much and not overweight. Relatively healthy diet but I think from now on I'm just going to adopt the everything in moderation view and try to ignore the constant depressing health warnings.

You are not unreasonable. Everything in moderation (something I need to practice.)

Thatstheendofmytether · 03/10/2018 14:36

What!!! Now I can't have my Saturday morning bacon and egg Sandwhich! Ffs, I give up. Same here OP, I'm not over weight, don't smoke, hardly drink and now bacon is bad for me!

PinkHeart5914 · 03/10/2018 14:36

Honestly something is going to kill all of us.

I drink, eat sugar and bacon. I’m alive and I’m going to do what I like and enjoy so I go for everything in moderation so far I am healthy, hopefully it stays that way but if not I’ve got to die at some point I can’t live forever

It's not the bacon, it's the preservatives added (sodium nitrate, or nitrates on the packaging)

You can get preservative free bacon but it's not as pretty and a bit more expensive

Otherwise, everything in moderation! :)

AuntBeastie · 03/10/2018 14:38

I’m a vegetarian so not the biggest bacon advocate in the world but honestly, while bacon isn’t healthy neither is lots of stuff so it shouldn’t be singled out in that respect. It sounds like you only eat it in moderation so what’s the harm!

longwayoff · 03/10/2018 14:40

As far as I'm aware, happy to be corrected, all preserved meats are carcinogenic to an extent. I expect a bacon sandwich every couple of weeks is fairly low risk. Eat lots of vegetables to help process it through your digestive system quickly.

pumpkinnicelatte · 03/10/2018 15:05

Thanks I could check out the preservative free one I suppose- didn't know that was a thing- but chasing it with vegetables might be a step too far, just a Brew and maybe an orange juice Wink

You can get naked bacon, no nasties.

Delatron · 03/10/2018 15:16

You would need to be eating a certain amount of bacon every day for your risk to raise slightly!

I do buy the organic, nitrate free stuff though.

ErickBroch · 03/10/2018 15:18

It is regular consumption of processed foods, not bacon every then and now, that proves a link. I wouldn't stress about it considering you aren't eating it that often.

LakieLady · 03/10/2018 15:27

Hmm, found this quote

"Dr Tom Beattie, health information officer at Breast Cancer Now, said: “This study adds further evidence that a high intake of processed meat may slightly increase breast cancer risk, but this link is far from confirmed."

Even if it is confirmed, the study found that eating processed meat by increased risk by 0.9%. There are around 200 cases of breast cancer per 100,000 women, so that would mean the numbers overall rise from 200 to 201.8 per 100.000.

That's not enough of a difference to make me give up bacon sarnies or a full English!

longwayoff · 03/10/2018 15:47

Not veg with the sacred sarnie! Just generally, loadsa veg.

donajimena · 03/10/2018 15:50

After sitting in my environmental science lecture a bacon sandwich is the least of my worries.

VeryQuaintIrene · 03/10/2018 15:59

I read a horrific report yesterday about the sufferings of sows being made to have way more piglets per year than they were made to do. Honestly, that puts me right off the stuff, never mind about the health aspects.
