Dreamstosell · 02/10/2018 20:29

Only one country and in only one town!

Stupomax · 02/10/2018 20:31

But lots of people agreed with her, hence why I started counting places I'd 'lived' for around 6 months. What do you think?

I think 6+ months is reasonable.

I spent all my school holidays in Germany because I had a parent there, but I wouldn't class it as living there. I didn't attend school or hold down a job, I didn't rent a house or pay bills, I didn't register to pay tax, etc.

Good question though.

oh and languages:
Indonesian, good conversational level in 3months
Dutch, good conversational level in 5 months
Russian, good conversational level in 12-18 months

that assumes you are using the language outside the home daily, and socialising with local speakers.

I'd also like to ask the posters who's lived in non speaking countries, how long did it take before you could speak the language fluently?

It didn't take me long, but where I was, a lot of people spoke limited English, which I think helped. I'm not as fluent now as I was ten years ago I'm not old I promise

4 - England, France, Singapore and South Africa. All as an adult - my twenties have pretty much been spent working abroad.

DH is on a lot more:
Australia, India, France, England, Netherlands, Wales, Singapore, Kuwait, South Africa, Philippines, Switzerland and Slovakia.

That’s across about a 17 year span of him being an adult.

I’m currently really struggling with my fourth country: France. May be I’m too old for all that.
