AIBU to think the rota should be more fair?

In our office our senior manager has come up with a weekly rota for a job and my name is on it twice, everyone else has to do it once a week. When I asked why, he said it was because if it wasn't me it would be someone else doing it twice. I said I thought it should be prorata'd so that the full timers do it more than part timers as obviously they are there more (I only work 3 days, so I'm doing it 2 out of 3 days). I suggested a fortnightly rota so maybe the p/t staff do it 2 times in a fortnight and the f/t staff do it 3 times a fortnight. He probably thinks I'm making a fuss over nothing. AIBU?

What’s the job? Filling th photocopier with paper? I’d just do it. Cleaning the communal kitchen? No way.

It's a job that nobody really likes doing but is part of our role. Takes about 15 mins. If it was a quick job I'd do it. I guess I'm also a bit annoyed that I was put on there twice without checking with me first

Well the twice should rotate so one week it's you, the next it's someone else , the next etc.
Depends how annoyed you will be over time, if it will really bug you make a fuss.

Why not allocate each person a set day and then have the last day on a rota so every week someone is doing the job twice a week. If someone is off and misses their one or two days then it is up to them to get someone to cover their day. Or get the next person on the rota to cover those days. This will balance out over the year as you'll all be off at some point through the year. I get what you're saying, it's a 15 min job but why does one person (you) get stiffed. Quite frankly I would have thought your line manager would have better skills at people management and be able work this out so it's fair for everyone not everyone but you.

Sure if someone has to be doing it twice, why not him instead of you? Assuming he does it at all, that is. It makes no sense.
I agree that there should be a set day and then extra day should be rotated.

Your boss doesn't like you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 01/10/2018 18:00

Oh god, I saw this and had an awful feeling someone was complaining about my rota skills😳

I’ve recently taken over the rota and Oh my god, it is a thankless, miserable task. It is impossible to please people and I find myself taking the shifts no one else wants or can do and working extra just to plug the flipping gaps. It’s shit.

It’s not me your are moaning about op though and FWIW, your rota is unfair and you are right to address itCake

bestofme21 · 01/10/2018 18:00

@ButtermilkBiscuits 🤣

Have to agree

Angrybird345 · 01/10/2018 18:10

Really depends what the job is and also, your boss isn’t keen on you/part time people. Seems to be treating you unfairly.

NerrSnerr · 01/10/2018 18:11

Takes about 15 minutes? Sounds like a quick job to me. Get it done and forget about it.

RedneckStumpy · 01/10/2018 18:13

15 mins is a quick job that’s not worth the effort to argue over.

Funkyslippers · 01/10/2018 18:42

Yeah it is a fairly quick job but it's not a straightforward job and it has risks involved. We've all been trained adequately though. I'm gonna do what's been suggested about sharing out the extra day fairly between us all. Thanks everyone
