Sorry blatant posting here for traffic.
I have just scalded myself with some boiling water from the kettle.
I do not need to consult a doctor or phone 111 it's a minor scald.

I just wondered if anyone had some tips on how to treat it so it stops hurting and i don't spend my evening with my wrist in cold water

Lots and lots of coolish water for longer than you think. I had a major scald and it hasn't scarred.

RayRayBidet · 01/10/2018 15:17

At least 20 minutes in cold water. Most people don't do this for long enough.

TheArtfulScreamer · 01/10/2018 15:17

Run it under cold water for 30 mins that's as much as you can do really and if you can keep it submerged in water it will help take the edge off the pain.

wink1970 · 01/10/2018 15:18

Do you have any aloe vera gel or aftersun left over from summer? I keep some in anyway as I'm a clumsy clot and burn myself a lot.

Cath2907 · 01/10/2018 15:18

Cold water for far longer than you think you need to.

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2018 15:19

Cool water for ages. Until you can take it out of the water without it hurting. At least 30minutes. Don’t put anything else on it.

Nousernameforme · 01/10/2018 15:20

Thanks everyone ill whack it back under then

When I scalded my hands badly enough to do the hospital dash I asked if there was anything else I could have done at home to reduce the damage. (I'd done the cold water treatment).

The staff in the burns unit told me the one additional thing I could do was put a plastic bag around the area (without contact) and secure it. Sounds bizarre but it reduces the air to the wound and longer term damage.

purplecorkheart · 01/10/2018 16:17

Keep in in cold water for at least 30 minutes.

Dinnaehinksae · 01/10/2018 16:22

After cooling it with water you could always try honey. It can get a bit messy but does seem to help

Mookatron · 01/10/2018 16:24

Back under tap and paracetamol.

noenergy · 01/10/2018 16:33

Toothpaste is very soothing

kitkatsky · 01/10/2018 16:38

Absolutely second the water advice. If you have someone who can go shopping for you get them to pick up some blister plasters for later. The relief they provide is amazing!!!

Darkstar4855 · 01/10/2018 16:39

Cold water for twenty minutes and take some ibuprofen and/or paracetamol.

kaytee87 · 01/10/2018 16:40

Yep 20 minutes under cold running water

TheQueenSnortsAvocados · 01/10/2018 16:59

Ffs don't put toothpaste on it!

AprilLady4 · 01/10/2018 16:59

Agree with PP cold water for a long time. Also I find if you soak a cloth in cold water and wrap it round the scalded bit for a long time, that helps with the pain. So far, I've only done this with very minor scalds, though.

ShockedHorrored · 01/10/2018 17:01

Don’t put honey or toothpaste on a scald. Just cold water.

specialsubject · 01/10/2018 17:01

water and a sterile dressing. otherwise only as advised by a medical professional.

no aloe vera, honey, baby bum cream, butter or any unsterile muck. Some of the advice on here will give you an infection.

PurpleDaisies · 01/10/2018 17:01

A scald is basically the same as a burn.

As most posters have rightly said, cold running water is the right treatment.

Don’t put toothpaste on it. Bloody hell. Hmm

sv2018 · 01/10/2018 17:03

Don't submerge a burn under water, it should be under running water. And although sugar will help it can also damage the skin so I wouldn't try that unless you absolutely need to

PurpleDaisies · 01/10/2018 17:04

Why would the op “absolutely need to” put sugar on a burn? Hmm

EwItsAHooman · 01/10/2018 17:06

No lotions, potions, or fucking toothpaste unless you actually want an infection.

Cold running water for at least 20 minutes, when you take it out of the water if it still feelings like it's burning then put it back under. Clean, sterile, non-fluffy dressing to protect it (you can get ones specific for scalds/burns) and don't pop any blisters.

If it's total surface area is larger than the palm of your hand then it needs to be assessed by a medical professional.

PurpleDaisies · 01/10/2018 17:06

Here’s the NHS advice..,

www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/

Please ignore anything else posted on the thread. Mumsnet burn advice is often pretty dreadful.

kaytee87 · 01/10/2018 17:09

Sugar?? Toothpaste??

Don't put anything except cold water on a burn unless prescribed by a medical professional.
