To think the Facebook profile picture 'blackout day' isn't quite right?

I haven't seen it happening on Brit's facebooks but most of my US female friends have change their profile pictures to just black. To show what a world without wine would be like.

This lady sums up how I feel about it better than me.

"I have now received over 100 private messages about a women's blackout tomorrow on Facebook. While I appreciate the thought that I would want to be informed, here's why I won't participate, in part:

Women are already invisible. We need to take up more room, not less. We need to show up, not disappear.

Women's voices are already not heard. We need to be speak up louder, not be silent.

In a time like this, women need to be able to dialogue in community, not sit in silence alone, isolated from other women--particularly those for whom this week has been a trigger to memories of their own assaults.

Women's faces are often not seen. We need to show our faces.

If you are participating, I wish you well, but I won't be joining you."

I got one of those messages a few hours ago. It’s to happen tomorrow in the uk.

billybagpuss · 30/09/2018 17:04

I'm so sorry, a very serious message now totally lost on me, I can't stop giggling. A world without wine would indeed be black Grin

🤭🤭🤭 😅🤭 I thought, wine? 🤨 surely that is an issue across all genders🤭

Rainbowtrain · 30/09/2018 17:11

@FissionChips 😂😂😂😂

cheesemongery · 30/09/2018 17:14

I thought your response was a bit OTT re the wine Grin. Brilliant!

ReanimatedSGB · 30/09/2018 17:20

A mate of mine asked me about this. I said it was wanky and I wouldn't be taking part - but I haven't seen any blacked-out faces on my FB feed today, so I don't think it's got very far.
It is wanky, useless and stupid, though not as bad as the fucking Black Dot, which was actively dangerous (though started with good intentions). It's as stupid as the Twitter boycott.

glagdy · 30/09/2018 17:33

You're all massive fuckers. Grin

I can't begin to imagine the pit of despair I'd be plunged into if it became a world without wine. My FB profile would definitely be blacked out.

I have seen a few blackout profiles today but there was no explanation and I was thinking it was a "I'm so depressed" thing and feeling worried for them. So thank you for the explanation. And I think you're right - we need to be more seen and more heard, not less. And what the hell does a changed FB profile picture actually achieve, anyway?

UnderaRock · 30/09/2018 17:44

I don't participate in crap like this honestly. I've gotten about 15 pms for it and I'm like Nope

LadyLaSnack · 30/09/2018 17:45

OP you’ve made me pop some post op stitches.

This is hilarious.

Grin

Sorry, and ready to engage again with the issue in hand

glagdy · 30/09/2018 18:04

Fuck's sake. When I actually try to be funny it's tumbleweed!

Really though, I obviously 100% agree things need to change, and the whole Kavenaugh situation makes me want to vomit. I've heard comments from friends and acquaintances I liked and respected that have made me shocked and sad.

I don't want to be part of a world without wine! Grin

Rainbowtrain · 01/10/2018 08:45

What was the Black Dot? @reanimatedSGB ?

Straycatblue · 01/10/2018 18:56

What's happening with the wine! Is it under threat! Don't do this to me...

What I couldn’t understand yesterday is why so many of my friends started out blacking iutbtheor profiles and were all back to normal by midday. It seemed a pretty minor protest. Then I wondered if they’d read this thread and were just worried about their wine.

MakeItStopNeville · 02/10/2018 03:13

Sorry, out their profiles! #iphonefatfingers

glagdy · 02/10/2018 12:21

@MakeItStopNeville ha!

In the cases I saw of that people read stuff that changed heir kinds and decided they didn't want to be silent!

The Black Dot idiocy. I think the woman meant well, but just didn't think it through.

TooManyPaws · 02/10/2018 23:47

Most of my friends are commenting that they refuse to be silenced or hidden. I feel more in tune with Still She Persisted.

Or maybe we all just like our wine. 🍷

SunnyInGrimsby · 03/10/2018 10:11

It's just irritating FB virtue signalling.
The other thing I loathe is cut and pasted posts asking you to copy them onto your page to show awareness for mental health blah blah.
Better of spending the time giving someone who needs it a ring or helping in a concrete way.
