Hi all

FTM to my 4 month old DD. I think she's teething as had a temp all day, not too high but high enough and shes very irritable.

I've just taken her pj bottoms off and her legs are red.

She was born 8 weeks early, bleed on brain when 3 days old and now has a condition called hydrocephalus. She has VP shunt and spent her first 13 weeks in hospital.

AIBU to take her to get checked over tonight? With her condition we have a passport to A&E, however I don't want to go if this is normal? She's usually a really calm, happy, non-needy baby and being irritable is a sign of shunt malfunction?

They've given you the passport for a reason. In your case I would use it, I think your gut is telling you something.

Just go. She has hydrocephalus and a VP shunt. You’re not used to how this affects her yet so understandably aren’t sure what her ‘normal’ is. The A&E staff won’t mind even if it’s nothing . . . which it probably is, but go anyway x

trust your instincts. Get your DD seen by a doctor straight away.

If in doubt then go!!! No-one will ever turn away a baby or tell you off for being over zealous.

As an aside - we had the passport as baby has NG (feeding) tube but the passport only "worked" if it was something to do with her tube. If I take her in for anything else then we have to be triaged and see Dr as usual. Not sure how your passport works?

Absolutely go, it might be nothing but either for her care or your reassurance (depending on the outcome) it really needs to be a professional to see her.

I’d say go to A&E. I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.

It could be the high temp and associated clamminess gives her a rash. That happens with dd2. But it takes a while and a few viruses to work that out...

Your dd is young, feverish, with a rash and previous health problems. You are absolutely doing the right thing taking her in OP.

I think it's likely a viral rash (not medical) but if they've given you a free pass for A&E it's cow they anticipate you needing it. Personally I'd still call 111 first because that bumps you up
Queue to be seen by out of hours, but trust your instincts!

Teething doesn't cause a high temperature. It might go up from normal by point 1-2 but not any higher. A temp usually indicates an infection.
