To not understand the unwritten rule of not having 2 hot meals a day?

Seeing it more and more that people cant have hot food twice a day.. cant possibly have spag bol for dinner because they had soup for lunch etc. It was a recent debate in my workplace so wondered how the jury of MN feel.

Surely its more about portions than temperature?

Id happily eat hot food for every meal - lunch is just typically smaller than my evening meal or vice versa sometimes at weekends...

Never heard of this! So in this new regime if you had a hot breakfast eg porridge, scrambled egg on toast etc does that mean everything else you eat that day needs to be cold? Are hot drinks OK, is it just the food temperature that is vital (genuinely intrigued by the thinking behind this!)?

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/09/2018 20:04

I usually have three hot meals a day because I much prefer hot food and hate it if circumstances dictate that I have to have cold food.

Some of the hot meals will be very simple like leftovers or an omelette so it's not like I have to cook all the time.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 29/09/2018 20:08

I’m aware some people seem to have this hang-up. Always remember a student friend asking if I would be having dinner too after seeing me eat scrambled eggs on toast for lunch. Her tone implied you glutton.

I do think most people only need one main meal a day, but the temperature of their dinner/lighter meal/breakfast is irrelevant. No wonder so many folk have ishoos.

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/09/2018 20:11

Hot food isn't necessarily more calorific or substantial than cold food. A sandwich and crisps or cake is likely to have more calories than a meal made from meat or fish and vegetables, or something like soup or beans on toast.

DrCoconut · 29/09/2018 20:15

Former PIL base eligibility for food on previous food that day. E.g you ate lunch out so you don't need dinner. You had an ice cream at the park so don't get a biscuit with your bedtime cup of tea etc. And never two hot meals in a day.

Justanothernamechange2 · 29/09/2018 20:16

Maybe its just a tradition where im from then. Many parents around me wont cook their kids a meal in the evening if theyvr had a hot school lunch. The debate at work started because i often take leftovers and someonr questioned how it was leftovers if i had it hot for dinner and hot for lunch..i was baffled! My elderly grandparents wont have hot twice either :s. Maybe its a fairly local to me thing rather than nationwide

I would be mildly surprised if someone had 2 "full hot meals" in a day eg; chilli, curry, lasagne, roast or similar. Soup, toasted sandwichesand jacket potatoes are exempt. I know it makes no logical sense

Stillwishihadabs · 29/09/2018 20:20

Oh and I'll only have pudding once a day

What is an old weirdo?

Susie Dent I am not, but I'd I were to play amateur lexicographer, I'd say it means a weirdo who is quite elderly.

PhilomenaButterfly · 29/09/2018 20:34

Emperor 😂

Well to be honest, i offer primary aged DC a sandwich if they’ve had a main meal such as roast dinner at lunchtime. But again It’s not about whether the food is hot or cold.

Andro · 29/09/2018 20:40

What a load of rubbish! In winter I'll often prepare 3 hot meals when I'm home, in summer it's not uncommon to have no hot meals - whatever works the people concerned.

Pinkprincess1978 · 29/09/2018 20:45

I've heard this - same as some people think you must have one hot meal a day and you are somehow doing something wrong if you don't.

AnnabelTheAntelope · 29/09/2018 20:47

Never heard of this either. I love soup for lunch. Do they mean they ate too much soup at lunch so couldn’t possibly eat spaghetti bolognese?

AnnabelTheAntelope · 29/09/2018 20:47

I often have porridge for breakfast too. I’m all kinds of wrong, clearly Grin.

Munchmallow · 29/09/2018 20:52

Well I'm quite old (but not to my knowledge a weirdo Hmm) and when we were children my mother used to make us 3 cooked meals a day, it was wonderful.

HidingFromMyKids · 29/09/2018 20:55

As others have said it shouldn't be about hot or cold but actual size and nutritional value.

For example having cold quiche cold new potatoes and salad at lunch would mean it's fine to have a feast of hot food later on. When actually you've probably had as many calories at lunch and I say that as someone who is overweight and isn't obsessed with calories.

If you think that me having scrambled eggs, mushrooms and spinach hot at lunch means I'm not going to have a hot meal for tea then your bonkers.

AdaColeman · 29/09/2018 20:59

I've never heard of that rule.

brizzledrizzle · 29/09/2018 21:00

I usually have porridge for breakfast, a jacket potato with something for lunch and whatever I fancy cooking for dinner. I think that's better than a bowl of sugary cereal for breakfast and a sandwich, crisps and chocolate bar for lunch.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 29/09/2018 21:02

Who can be arsed to cook three times a day, though?

If eating out, fine.

XingMing · 29/09/2018 21:03

As a PP has said, the temperature of food doesn't affect its calorific content. But hot filling soups (like I make in winter) are a full meal, containing protein, veg and carbs. They are enjoyed on a cold day on an exposed site because they are more warming than salad.

SoyDora · 29/09/2018 21:04

Eggs on toast for breakfast takes 10 mins. Porridge less. I don’t ‘cook’ a hot lunch, DD1 has it at school. I often have soup (hardly cooking) or maybe some pasta. Normal cooked dinner.
In the summer we can sometimes go days without a hot meal.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/09/2018 21:05

The temperature of my meal would depend on the weather.
I could easily have a cold lunch and dinner, salads, crudités, hummus, cold meats; rather than just a sandwich.

In cold weather, I would want a hot lunch and dinner

XingMing · 29/09/2018 21:05

Erm.... me! I cook breakfast and dinner, and I make sure there's lunch too, albeit that's usually left over bits and pieces, cobbled together.
