WWYD neighbours dog

More of a WWYD than AIBU.

I've just moved into a new home and the neighbours dog (who at first I thought was a stray) keeps wandering onto our front garden as and when it pleases, and pissing.

I want to knock this on the head so it doesn't become an ongoing annoyance but I don't know how to broach the subject with the neighbours without sounding confrontational or getting off on the wrong foot.

We live in a cul de sac and everyone has been wonderful welcoming us with cards, chocolates etc which makes me more reluctant to stir anything up.

I don't want to erect a fence as nobody else in the neighbourhood has one in their front garden so would look weird and also don't think I should have to spend money on this.

The dog only seems to wander onto our garden, maybe because the house has been unoccupied for some time?

So WWYD to kindly let the neighbours know to keep their dog off our garden without sounding bitchy??

It frustrates me that I'm feeling guilty because someone else is happy to let their dog have free reign.

I would just kindly point out that you saw dog peeing on your garden and would they mind not allowing him to in future.

Is it the pissing or the presence of the dog that’s upsetting you?
If it’s the dig, have a polite word as yanbu to suggest that not everyone likes dogs. If it the pissing, I’d suggest ignoring it as it’s harmless enough.
Different story if it’s leaving logs behind.... grim!

I have dogs and would never allow them to wander into a neighbouring garden and wee.

It’s just general good manners surely to keep your pets/children/visitors/cars etc off of someone else’s property. I wonder if the neighbour doesn’t realise their dog is wandering off?

I would go and talk to them. They sound like good neighbours and will probably be hugely apologetic.

You should speak to them. I have a dog and don't allow him to pee in other people's gardens - he should be on a tight enough lead to prevent that.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/09/2018 15:32

Have you spoken to them yet? If not you could go round to introduce yourself and say hello and bring the conversation round to the dog. Be nice but firm and say you don't want the dog pissing on your garden..
I know it's a bit awkward for you but you're not doing anything wrong - they are!

How is the dog free-roaming into your garden? Is it when they let it out for wee it comes to yours instead of theirs? Surely they should be supervising it outside Confused

My dogs wee on my front lawn and it leaves dead grass and “burn marks” so is unpleasant if you like to have nice grass

You could let them know they can buy a little stick to pop in their lawn that attracts the dog to just pee in one place, can get them online and at Pets At Home

Good luck!

There may well be a note on your deeds saying that a fence can't be erected in the front garden. There is on ours, so we built a wall. Smile. I would tell the neighbour not to let their dog go on your property. If the problem continues, contact the dog warden.

I'd just grab his collar every single time, walk him back & knock & say with a cheery smile here he is, he must have got out. They'll get fed up & get the hint.

SynchroSwimmer · 29/09/2018 18:49

I think some dogs like to repeatedly “mark” the same spot, so it could form a habit for him

Dogs dislike lavender aroma.

Wrong time of year to plant lavender but could try getting your hands on some lavender heads from say a friends garden to scatter in the affected area?...or cheap lavender oil...just to see if it will deter the dog from visiting till he seeks somewhere else?
