To want to run 3 weeks post c-section?

DS was born 3 weeks ago by emergency cesarean for failure to progress (rather than any serious emergency). I have had no complications since and recovery has actually been very easy. I get some mild tingling/stinging in my scar from time to time but that’s all.

I’ve been walking several miles, off road so on relatively technical terrain, most days since about 10 days postpartum. I did 5 miles with the pushchair on my own on Wednesday. I exercised regularly right up until the end of my pregnancy and had done a long gym session the day my waters broke so I still feel like I have a reasonable level of fitness.

DH is doing parkrun tomorrow and suggested I might like to walk the course with DS. WIBU to walk the first couple of loops of the course with DS in the pushchair, then let DH take him once he’s finished and gently jog the last loop - about 1.5km? Obviously it would be VERY gentle and slow and I would walk if it hurt at all.

What is my GP actually going to tell me at 6 weeks about my recovery and my readiness to exercise that I done already know/feel now? Has anyone else resumed activity a bit earlier?

Not legged it, just don’t have anything to say really? I’m aware IABU and have said I won’t run just yet and was spending time with DH and DS.

Trout you hadn’t had abdominal surgery!!!!

I was aware of that... was responding to several posters who implied that running

megletthesecond · 29/09/2018 06:34

Don't even attempt it.
I was at the gym until the end of both pregnancies but didn't even attempt a very very slow 2 min treadmill run until 12 weeks post CS.
The internal wounds take much longer to heal than the external ones so wait until week 6 to drive.

EndeavourVoyage · 29/09/2018 06:43

It depends how fit you are before, I fix a Triathlon s week before my DD was born and had a CS then ran a XC 4 weeks later.
If you feel ok of course you can.

GeorgeTheHippo · 29/09/2018 20:24

You can't drive until you are medically cleared to do so, you will be uninsured. Which is a criminal offence, obviously.

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 20:25

That’s not true hippo. You just have to tell your insurance company. Mine said get back driving whenever you feel able, no medical clearance whatsoever

RoseAndRose · 29/09/2018 20:52

You cannot drive if it is against doctor's orders (that will void your insurance). The rule of thumb is 6 weeks after major surgery, including CSecs, but you can be cleared before that. Speak to your HCPs if you are not sure if you are fit.

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 20:54

No that’s still not true ^^

Fatted · 29/09/2018 20:58

No. Just no!

I drove 3 weeks after my second c-section because I felt fine. I was in agony the next day and started bleeding again after I'd stopped. It was a 20 minute journey!

You've had major abdominal surgery. What advice would you give to someone who had just had their appendix out asking the same question?!

RoseAndRose · 29/09/2018 21:20

If you mean my post, yes it is true.

If you drive against medical advice your insurance is void. If you do not know what the advice is for you as an individual in your specific circumstances, ask a HCP.

The old rule of thumb is 6 weeks after major surgery, but you may well not have to wait that long. If you are in any doubt, check with HCP or (as I shouid have added) your insurance provider.

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 21:25

Only if its against medical advice. Standard c section advice is to inform your insurance company and take their advice on what you need to do to comply with their terms. At least, it is at my hospital, and the major teaching hospital where my sister is a midwife, can’t imagine they’re the only ones

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 21:26

(As in - you don’t need to be “cleared” by a hcp unless your insurance company tell you to. Neither of mine required that)
