Temporary change of working hours with 1 days notice

Less aibu but what is being unreasonable? DH manager's manager came to him this morning to tell him he needs to work 9.30-5.30 for the next 2 weeks rather than the 7-3 he has worked since he started 7 months ago. They've just made 19 of the 22 person team redundant, DH now needs to be there so the office is manned all the time while his manager is on holiday. In principle it's a fair request, but the notice period is so tiny, is he unreasonable to refuse? So not to drip feed I start work between 4.30 and 6pm 4 nights a week, he works 40 miles away and the new hours would be in rush hour heavy traffic and we have two small primary aged children who can't be left alone, on the temporary hours I either have to take the kids to work with me with an ipad and hope for the best (possible given my job but not ideal by any means if they decided not to stay engrossed with the digital babysitter) or find someone to cover for me this week.

The request is reasonable as a request, not as a demand with 24 hours notice

I would be inclined to say that if they have just laid people off then they knew they would leave themselves short staffed and the management should have covered that before now. It's not your DHs fault they won't be able to cover it.

Covering for a day or two of sickness is one thing but 2 weeks on a days notice, I'd be saying no way.

He just need to say he's happy to be flexible but he can only stay until xxx time (depending on what shift you're doing).
