To go to toddlers group with conjunctivitis

verite · 28/09/2018 07:28

Am I? It’s me not the toddler. I am treating it and obviously am very aware of how not to spread it (ie no eye touching, regular hand washing). But is it a big no anyway?

Very U. It's highly contagious. I wouldn't take mine; it's only one day.

Kintan · 28/09/2018 07:38

Can you really go to a toddler group and not touch anything? If so I’d say it’s fine to go, but in reality we touch our eyes unconsciously and I’m sure you’ll be touching toys etc. Is there a reason you can’t miss the group for one day? Hope you get better soon, conjunctivitis is so annoying!

Mulberry72 · 28/09/2018 07:38

YABVVU!

verite · 28/09/2018 07:54

No I can miss it of course. It’s just it’s my only day off with DD and she loves the group. So I was hoping everyone would say it would be fine! But I take on board your comments and won’t go.

Just go. Especially since it’s you and not the lo. I think you can manage not touching your eyes. It’s not even excludable for children either but I wouldn’t take them to an optional activity if they were affected. Seriously just go. Chances of spreading are slim to none

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2018 08:04

I wouldn’t go. DS spent 9 days in hospital as a result of complications arising from conjunctivitis when he was 17 months old (8 years ago), and was extremely unwell - temp of 41 for 3 days, did not react to treatment. I have taken conjunctivitis very seriously ever since.

Sausagedogsandpugs · 28/09/2018 08:04

Chances of getting it are slim to none? Am intrigued to know how it is spread so easily then?

verite · 28/09/2018 08:10

I may have a strange strain (or I am very very good at hand hygiene etc) as I have re-occurring bouts of it and so far none of DC or DH have caught it! Touch wood. Anyway I won’t go just in case and will hibernate at home instead!

No please don't go OP, inevitably someone's kid (or parent) will get it, and even if not from you will blame you.

It's difficult when you've got a contagious illness but you've got to do the right thing.

Spam88 · 28/09/2018 08:16

I'd go personally, adults are perfectly capable of not spreading conjunctivitis. Would keep well away if my daughter had it of course.

MauraIsles · 28/09/2018 08:23

No! I wouldn’t go, as adults we obviously have a better understanding of hygiene, but this is very contagious and not nice for a child to have to deal with - I can’t believe some posters are suggesting it’s ok! You aren’t allowed to go to School with conjunctivitis because it’s highly contagious, so no way should you be attending a toddler group!

ree348 · 28/09/2018 08:27

No you shouldn't be going! Even though the chances of it spreading in a toddler group are low as a parent I wouldn't appreciate it if my child got it because some haphazard parent thought it would be ok.

afishnotabird · 28/09/2018 08:30

Can we get OP banned from AIBU for being downright reasonable Grin?

Looneytune253 · 28/09/2018 08:33

@Sausagedogsandpugs it’s spread by touching your eye and then touching other things or people. Obv this spreads fast amongst young children as they can’t control it but adults have enough self restraint to not touch or know if they do they need to wash their hands

LoisLittsLover · 28/09/2018 08:33

Nhs advice is that you can go to school or work with it

Looneytune253 · 28/09/2018 08:34

@verite there is something called allergic conjunctivitis which I used to get all the time. Not contagious and for me there was no discharge (apart from water) but maybe that’s what you have? I had it for years but haven’t had it for a few years now

lornathewizzard · 28/09/2018 08:35

Yes just to correct a previous poster it's not excludable from nursery/school as per nhs guidelines although some schools might have that as policy

DancingForTheDog · 28/09/2018 08:47

As it's recurring and the family have never being infected, perhaps ask for a referral to the eye hospital. My husband has this and we, and the gp, treated it as conjunctivitis for a few years. Turns out it's an autoimmune condition that flares up occasionally. He has steroid drops for it now and sees the ophthalmic consultant once a year.

PiggyPoos · 28/09/2018 09:00

They used to say you couldn't take children to Nursery but now they don't exclude for it so when one gets it they all do.

I think the guidance must have changed but the GP won't give drops for ages now

Anyway I had it last year and I looked like a hot mess but if it's fairly mild and you are careful I can't see the huge issue.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 28/09/2018 09:05

I think you’d be fine to go to toddler group as long as you are very careful with hand hygiene. Please go and see your GP about it though, if it keeps coming back it might need stronger treatment, or there could be something else going on which needs investigating.

hellokittymania · 28/09/2018 09:47

Please, please don't! I am visually impaired and I will never forget the time our school, especially the school had a conjunctivitis season going on. Not fun and it's really painful. And we use our hands for everything, and unfortunately it is known that children with visually impaired month tend to poke their eyes, I was no exception. So please don't go and wash your hands very very thoroughly if they are anywhere near your eyes!
