Smoking breaks at work

If you smoke... do you think you are entitled to extra cigarette breaks ( not part of your allocated break times)? Hmm

Thehop · 27/09/2018 20:49

No they bloody shouldn’t be.

Ginmakesitallok · 27/09/2018 20:50

I vape now. But no. Of course smokers / vapers aren't entitled to extra breaks.

chipsandpeas · 27/09/2018 20:51

no but if i have a extra break its not affecting my work plus im usualy a lot quicker than someone making cups of tea and having a chat at the kettle

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 27/09/2018 20:51

Not at all. If you smoke you do it in your own time

fraggle500 · 27/09/2018 20:51

My thoughts exactly- but I'm being made to feel I'm the unreasonable one! Shock

OP posts:
CherryPavlova · 27/09/2018 20:52

Absolutely not.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 27/09/2018 20:52

You're definitely not unreasonable.

fraggle500 · 27/09/2018 20:55

Thank you all for your replies -
Chips - I understand your point, however if your on the " shop floor" I think it is unreasonable to leave for 2x extra cigarette breaks a day... you can't make your time or work up in those work situations

I'm a smoker and I don't go for smoke breaks at work. I don't have one at lunch either as I don't want to smell in a confined space.
I smoke when I get home.

It's good though, I've gone from 10 a day when I was a student to maybe 1 or 2.

thereareflowersinmygarden · 27/09/2018 20:59

If you're that bothered, take up smoking and join them.

I don't smoke, btw

Ollivander84 · 27/09/2018 21:00

I vape and no, same breaks as anyone else

fraggle500 · 27/09/2018 21:01

@ maybe
That's more than acceptable, it's when people have their full break entitlement and extra on top!
I feel like I've had this debate for the last 40 odd years!!! As a non smoker, I just don't get it... thought I might be missing something!

LemonysSnicket · 27/09/2018 21:02

Although i think allowances should be made for moodiness if they are trying to quit and if they're struggling to work without it then should be allowed to whilst they cut down.

It is a self made addiction, but it's still an addiction and it's hard to kick.

Waddsup12 · 27/09/2018 21:02

I used to trail out after the smokers as they had extra breaks! It was a good chance to talk to the boss.

ShutUpBaz · 27/09/2018 21:02

The smokers in my workplace take the absolute piss. Its being cracked down on at the moment, and they are livid.

As a non-smoker, I have zero sympathy and find their anger hilarious.

Smoking is an addiction but it is primarily a choice. Smokers should not get extra breaks.

LemonysSnicket · 27/09/2018 21:03

@ShutUpBaz surely all addictions, other than food addictions, are choice?

confusedmomm · 27/09/2018 21:04

I take 20 m lunch and then pop out for 5m sig breaks throughout the day, instead of taking one hour lunch.

cakesandphotos · 27/09/2018 21:04

I worked somewhere where the senior staff frequently went out for a smoke. After really long days (it was a boarding school and we were on call 22 hours a day) I used to pretend I smoked just to get an extra 5-10 minutes away from house 5 times a day. Used to wind me up!

QOD · 27/09/2018 21:04

Exactly the same at my work Also, the manager smokes so he gets people to go out with him 🙄

fraggle500 · 27/09/2018 21:05

@ shut up - do we work at the same place Grin

OP posts:
Pardalis · 27/09/2018 21:05

As a smoker, I don't take a lunch break and split it over a few smoke breaks. Although ultimately they take less than a lunch hour. And it's accepted at our place that you can have a mid morning/afternoon break.

I caught the junior members of my team playing pool. In the middle of the afternoon. They claimed they were having a break. They both smoke. I told them they could give up smoking and play pool but they couldn't do both smoke breaks and pool. They said 'fair' 😂

SoozC · 27/09/2018 21:05

Definitely not unreasonable. If they have a 5-minute break for a cigarette you should also be entitled to a 5-minute break to do what you want. Each and every time they have one. Four 5-minute breaks is 20 minutes you can take for yourself during the day too. That's only fair.

fraggle500 · 27/09/2018 21:07
