To think you shouldn't have to wear business wear clothes working in a call Centre?

So I've recently got a job working in a call centre.
The dress code is formal and it's black trousers and a smart shirt.
I think it's a bit silly seen as though nobody sees you but anyway yesterday the manager took me to one side and said my black trousers were too tight and they needed to be bootcut rather than straight leg.
Aibu to think this is a bit crazy?

I wouldn’t be seen dead in bootcut trousers!

Slim or straight leg black trousers are equally as smart. Ask for a copy of the dress code and stick to it. I bet it specifies black trousers but not which style.

I worked in a call centre with no outside visitors at all!
I was called into the office everyday for bullshit like I wasn't wearing enough make up, my hair wasn't straightened, I look better with my hair down. They talked about my eating habits because I'm overweight and that I'd do well going on a diet (I was fat when they employed me and all things I'm sure are against the law to tell people in the work place). They even told me to wash my own personal car as it was making their car park unsightly! I quit after 6 months when the anxiety was making me cry in the car every morning before I went in, and then had to retouch my make up so my face didn't offend anyone.
I think it's BS but if you were aware before taking the job then you have to roll with it.
I knew I had to dress smartly which I had no problem with. I should've realised they thought it was some form of fashion show.
I got in trouble on own clothes day for wearing trainers, manager was halfway through calling me into the office before I reminded her everyone was wearing trainers as it was own clothes day 🤨 that's how much she was set in her ways of picking on me.
It's weird and I truly don't understand it but I imagine it's to have a sense of professionalism and to set the tone for the work day.

Absolutely, when you are running a contact centre, it will absolutely be up to you to stipulate any dress code.

Meanwhile, your options are to accept it as part of the job, or get another job.

Satsumaeater · 28/09/2018 09:58

When you agreed to the terms and conditions of the job, you would have known this

Not necessarily. I very much doubt the contract of employment stipulates anything and you often don't see the staff handbook until you are in the job.

I didn't realise people were still so fashion-bound though - comments like no bootcut since 2005 - hug, don't adults wear what they want? Are we adult women or 13 year olds on MN? Anyway as I said I can't wear skinny jeans.

Satsumaeater · 28/09/2018 09:58

huh not hug!

I think it's a sign of respect and commitment to work, rather than just looking good for people. If you dress smart you think smart, kind of thing.

Like wearing a uniform to school.

Wearing/not wearing a uniform has no impact on pupils educational attainment.

Ambulance control call centre wear full uniform - green combat paramedic pants and a polo shirt plus fleece and boots

Where I work now we are on view to customers so business dress rule - I wear skinny trousers though, usually with a jersey casual top. Fridays and Saturdays are dress down

We used to have dress down Friday at my work. And the rest of the week was “business casual” but we got a new ceo with a penchant for floral shorts and stone washed jeans and this summer men were complaining (rightly so) that they couldn’t wear even smart chino shorts but women could wear dresses etc, so now the dress code is “dress appropriately.” It seems to be working so far, most people turn up in the clothes they were always wearing and lots others, like me get to wear clothes that we feel comfortable in like jeans etc.
