AIBU to go to pharmacy if I'm coughing and there's streaks of blood? At the tail end of a cold, I think I'd BU to make a GP appt, someone else should be able to have a quick listen to my chest surely?

Of course you need to see the doctor.

Thanks, phone lines are now closed, I will give them a go later. Feel so awful going there now knowing how hard it is for them.

Defo GP or NHS 24 (or 111 I think it is in England) if you can't get hold. It's probably just a bit of a tear from all the coughing but needs to be checked.

That is their job and treating sick people is what they do. You may need antibiotic if you have an infection. You won't be wasting thier time or anything like that. Hope all goes well.

HoleyCoMoley · 27/09/2018 13:22

Hope you are feeling ok, if you can't see the Dr can you go to a local hospital, you don't want to leave it.

Don't be such a martyr Hmm

It's quite common to see streaks of blood in phlegm when you've been coughing a lot (normally caused by tiny blood vessels rupturing from the pressure).

Do you have a fever or chills?
Do you have chest pain?
Is there more than a few streaks?
Are you coughing up dark green or brown phlegm?
Are you at risk of TB eg travelled abroad recently to countries where it's still prevalent?

If the answer to all those is no, I'd rest at home as it's probably just traces of blood from tiny ruptured vessels (like when you get bloodshot eyes from tiredness or traces of blood in nasal mucous from blowing too much). See your GP tomorrow if you're worried. Obviously seek urgent medical if you feel worse or have any signs of an infection.

Seriously - what’s with this martyrdom? It ties into this weird attitude that if you’re ill you’re weak in some way.

There is no way anyone could really be coughing up blood and think it’s unreasonable to consult a doctor.
