Garage Parking - AIBU

I own a lock up garage in a block of 8 garages in a road close to my house. I own a rectangular plot that includes the garage and forecourt. Parking in my area is limited so I use my garage to park my car in front of. There are two entrances to the garage block and my garage is luckily in front of one of them. I park my car in a way so that other owners can access their garages freely.

I am generally the only owner who uses their garage as parking but I think that other owners frequently visit as at least one of them runs a business from their garage.

I do get irritated at local residents (non-owners) who park their cars on the other empty plots and occasionally, if I see them, tell them that they can't park there as it is private property. This usually results, like this morning, in a litany of excuses and minor confrontations ('Parking is difficult', 'I only park here when I have to', 'I park considerately' etc.). I am interfering for two reasons; a) they shouldn't park there, b) I don't want a freeforall to develop where people park on my land (as has happened in the past).

My question; Am I an interfering busybody or is my approach reasonable?

Unless people are encroaching on your space, I wouldn't have said anything.

frecklefox · 26/09/2018 14:25

OP, might they have the other garage/plot owners' permission?

I wouldn't have said anything if it didn't involve my particular plot, but may be tempted to put a sign on the garage door saying something along the lines of 'do not park in front of doors - garage in constant use' to ensure no one parked in front of yours while you were out. What happens to other people's plots is their problem, not yours - though I admire your sense of justice!

fox,

No permission obtained AFAIK - it would be the obvious response when challenged. They usually park across two consecutive plots so would need two garage owner's permission to do that.
One garage of the 10 (I just counted them) has a sign on the door to the effect that access is required 24/7. Will get a sign for my own and probably keep my nose out. They do sometimes block one of the access points to my garage which means I have to park facing the garage door rather than facing outwards which I prefer.
I just think they are CFs. I did suggest to one of them that I should be able to use his toilet whenever I wanted, in line with his attitude to other peoples property.

There will always be 2 camps for this one:

  1. Well, no one else is using it...
  2. It isn't yours, so don't use it...

I am in Camp 2... mainly because I wouldn't do it to anyone else (and believe me the amount of parking I do in any day it would be handy if I had the nerve to use random driveways) and so don't really accept it when people do it to me!

YANBU. I hate it when people do things like that (namely park across my drive blocking me in) then come back with 'but I'm late for work/svhokk/dentist'.

Not really any of your business if it's not affecting you

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/09/2018 15:28

The same would apply to someone popping in and using your loo when you weren't physically doing so... or maybe not!
