Actually this is "Is my neighbour being unreasonable"

My ds has a drum kit which we keep in the garage at the end of the garden. He comes in from school and goes for a practise session. The other day he was playing and because it was hot he kept the door open (wrong i know). Anyway about 15 mins after he started (about 4.45) a neighbour from a few doors up came and knocked on door and ranted about the drumming saying it was all she heard since she got in from work. Now I completely understand how she feels but we felt that that was actually the best time to drum when there are less neighbours in.

actually i was thinking of an electric one but as you say very expensive.

practice pads are just crap as you get no feedback at all

In my old house there was a lad about 6 houses down and his paretns had converted the attic with soundproofing for him to play his drums BUT in the summer he used to open the velux window and he could be heard all down the street. His folks used to stop him at about 9pm. Anything up to then was fair game as far as everyone was concerned. It wasn't every night and it wasn't all the time so i think your neighbours ARE being unreasonable. Youngsters will generally get up to noisy things. Wait till he buys and soups up a car and sits revving the engine with his stereo blasting.

TheArmadillo · 11/06/2007 17:27

your neighbour is being unreasonable.

If he was playing for several hours a day or between 10pm and 8am then I could see why she was complaining.

Otherwise she's making a fuss over nothing. PEople make noise. And this is not unreasonable noise.

I lived next to a drummer for years. It can be a bit annoying sometimes, but mostly unless it is late at night or non stop then you have no grounds fro complaint.

BrothelSprouts · 11/06/2007 17:28

I think he should be able to practise for a little while at least.
Perhaps if you agree on 30 minutes at a certain time of day, and let your neighbour know when this will be.
Live and let live.
And he can take her for a spin in his Bentley when he becomes a rock star.

Mumpbump · 11/06/2007 17:28

Why not ask the neighbour when would be a good time for him to practice? Put the ball in her court, then if anyone else complains, say you were just trying to oblige her and could they go and sort out a time between them. They can't do anything about it anyway unless it is at antisocial hours and above a certain level of decibells - I had to look into this when I was living in a flat with neighbours who came in p*ssed and noisy at 01:00 am...

I think the electric drum kit is worth it, I got a roland one with throne and pedal on interest free for £650, the sell 2nd on ebay for almost that!!!!!!!!!

Better still she keeps it ex-dh!
