to consider turning down this job?

Mu fixed term contract ends in December and I have been offered a part time job for a different organisation
. In some ways it sounds good - fairly flexible, some interesting work (but some dull work) with an ok commute. However I think we will stuggle on the pay and its a tiny company with me in a stand alone role which I think I would find isolating.

I still have over two months to find a role but am nervous I might not be offered anything else. Any thoughts anbout how to reach a decision would be amazing. Thanks!

I would keep looking for a better paid role.

Thanks Loopy. Everytime I think that my little "might be your only offer" voice comes along.

Can you accept it and then pull out if something comes along? Maybe set yourself a deadline of oct 31st so you are still giving them a good amount of notice.

I had considered this. I think they are keen for me to start soon but I could say current job are insisting I stay till the end and keep looking.

We can’t know your qualifiations and position in the labour market, or how many vacancies there are where you work, suggest being analytical about your chances of finding something better paid. Will also depend on your financial situation etc. But with two months to go, and presumably the option of temping too, it seems unecessary to accept a job paying less than you can manage on.

Is your fixed term role definitely ending? I left a fixed term job years ago and its still going..... I have regretted not staying many times 😢

If you are going to struggle financially in the new job and not enjoy parts of it I wouldn't take it. Yes, a bad job is better than no job but you aren't in a desperate situation yet. January is often a busy month in the job market so even if you don't find anything before this contract finishes what do you feel your chances would be at the start of next year?

Just wanted to add I think you are selling yourself short. I have a tendency to do this too. You don't need to accept a lower paid, part time job unless it's specifically what you are looking for.

I checked this morning and no chance of being extended but good shout to ask. I am fairly well qualified and experienced and the bit about selling myself short has really stuck a cord.
