It’s a best before date, not use by, so there is no issue.

Whiskeyjar · 25/09/2018 12:43

What was the use by date?

BumDisease · 25/09/2018 12:45

Best before is not the same as use by.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/09/2018 12:48

Could it be that they've accidentally over looked the dates and aren't aware. If it's treats it'll be probably be BB rather than UB.
If they were selling OOD meat/yogurt/milk They would be Breaking the law.
I'm not going to patronise you about the differene between UB and BBF
I think they can still sell if it's best before. Although I do think they have to state that it's OOD and sell them cheaper. I only think BTW. I'm not saying I'm a consumer expert.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 25/09/2018 12:52

It was on special offer because its just gone out of date. It won't harm you. If it tasted awful, take it back for a refund

Newsheet · 25/09/2018 13:09

Take it back for a refund!!?????

Really. It was cheap because it was last it’s BEST BEFORE date. Which means it won’t taste as good as it used to but is not unfit to eat.

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 25/09/2018 13:19

I picked up some muesli bars in my local Co-op but the cashier politely
told me that she couldn't sell me them because they were out of date!

( woo hoo paragraphs are back!)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/09/2018 13:33

can you even get a refund on sweetsConfused

Someonehelpmi · 25/09/2018 13:37

A very well known health/beauty store was selling shelves of out of date baby food the other day. All the staff were completely unaware

EdisonLightBulb · 25/09/2018 13:41

I always though the fact that Poundstretcher and B&M and the like sold branded foods so cheaply was because they were close to the Use By date.

I don't really have an issue with this, although I would if it were full price from Sainsbury's.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 25/09/2018 13:42

You can get a refund on them if they are unfit for purpose. You can't expect it to taste as good as in date stuff, but is should still be edible. They should have made you aware that it was reduced because it was out of date

Agentornika · 25/09/2018 13:47

I think they have to make you aware it's put of date and it should be reduced

noenergy · 25/09/2018 13:52

In most discount stores it will be reduced and have a sign saying short date or out of date.

HildaZelda · 25/09/2018 13:59

@Someonehelpmi, someone is going to seriously get their backside kicked for that one. I used to work for a company before and one of their main products was baby food. Legally babyfood must be removed from shelves ONE MONTH before the best before date. I have seen supermarkets get into real trouble over this before.
If the company in question begins with B, then I'm not the slightest bit surprised.

As for other products, shops are not allowed to sell ANYTHING that has passed its date, but they may be sold off at a reduced price when the date is quite close. It's a slightly grey area, but the general consensus is that the customer should be made aware that the product is short dated.
This applies to dry grocery though (eg: chocolate, biscuits etc) Fresh food is a whole other ball game.

There is a big difference between “use by” dates, that you are talking about and “best before” dates that the OP is talking about.

One you can’t sell
Once the date is gone, and the other you can, but it’s a given that it might be past it’s best.

Bluelady · 25/09/2018 14:16

Its BB date was 25 days ago, it'll be fine.
