Medicine out of reach of kids ... how old?

Keeping medicine out of reach of little fingers is obviously good practice.

Tell me though, what age would you start to relax a bit and trust them not to touch?

We have the kitchen bloke who deigns your kitchen coming on Wednesday. I'll ask him if they do lockable drawers. If not i'll look into getting one done after it's fitted. Many thanks for all the thoughts and ideas.

My parents have a digital lock safe (to stop mum accessing them rather than ds) which is really easy to use. I guess it depends on what medication she is on as to how careful you need to be as well - my mum has morphine patches which look interesting to touch and like a plaster, but obv very dangerous

My father in law lives with us until he died, My children were 2 when he moved in and 5 when he died. All medicine, of which there were a lot, were kept in a locked cupboard in his bedroom which the children knew they were not allowed in. He then had a dossette machine which dispensed pills at pre programmes times. I used to fill it up for him once a week. We got it from this company...www.pivotell.co.uk however it does depend on your situation. Fil moved in so we could care for him full time so I was in charge of all his medication etc, otherwise there was a strong chance he would get confused and take too much or forget to take it. I just impressed on my children as they got older that if they ever found a pill on the floor they much not touch it and tell me straight away, whilst taking every precaution I could to make sure the medicine was never in their reach.

Ds is 8 and on lots of medications. Although he now knows not to touch them and knows when each is due the only one I would let him access himself is the ventolin inhaler which is ofren within his reach especially when ill, although he can’t phsixally trigger the inhaler yet anyway (but his two preventers still stay away!)
