To be annoyed at people who miss off the I or We starting a sentence?

It's becoming an epidemic. I can't keep it together any longer. It seems that people can no longer be bothered to put I or We or whatever at the beginning of sentences.

I.e. Made a mistake.. no. You mean 'I made a mistake'.

You see my point? Is this how we are slowly sleepwalking into text speak in normal conversations or am I just an old fashioned *

I have never heard this... is it a regional thing?

PurpleDaisies · 23/09/2018 18:32

Personal preference. No need to get wound up about it. Starting every sentence with “I” or “we” makes writing pretty dull to read.

ScreamingValenta · 23/09/2018 18:32

It's telegraphese, not text speak, and dates from the age of the telegram.

TheDowagerCuntess · 23/09/2018 18:35

I would possibly write that in a text (I never write in text speak), for the purpose of speed.

It's just an informal language/communication thing, and I don't necessarily think endemic of any catastrophic language decline.

KatherinaMinola · 23/09/2018 18:37

I do that, but I think the practice itself is old fashioned. Look at any letters from late nineteenth and early twentieth century and you'll see it there!

9amtrain · 23/09/2018 18:38

I do it as do most people I see write online...

SoupDragon · 23/09/2018 18:41

You see my point?

I presume you meant “Do you see my point?”

LanguidLobster · 23/09/2018 18:43

Oh I do that all the time, sorry. Only in texts or MN.

I doubt I'll change my ways though :)

BiscuitsAreLife · 23/09/2018 18:45

I thought exactly the same thing SoupDragon 😂

Walkingdeadfangirl · 23/09/2018 18:46

think you are being unreasonable. never did this when was younger but its how language has evolved. all need to adapt or our children will laugh at us for being out of touch with the modern world.

SoyDora · 23/09/2018 18:47

I was going to comment saying ‘surely you mean ‘do you see my point?’ but I was beaten do it!

WoollyMollyMonkey · 23/09/2018 18:49

see what you did there walkingdeadfangirl oops Grin

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/09/2018 18:55

I doubt this OP will be back! Grin

MacNcheese87 · 23/09/2018 18:58

Don't know what all the fuss is about.Grin

MrsStrowman · 23/09/2018 18:58

In a text I would do this. 'running behind, will be ten minutes late, sorry see you shortly!' for example. Not sure I see the issue with that?

Cabochard · 23/09/2018 18:59

My personal dislike is:
Am pregnant
I’d like a bit more to the sentence too.
Maybe an I Grin

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/09/2018 19:00

Isn’t this just about the evolvement of language?

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 23/09/2018 19:02

I do this quite a bit.

Never realised people had a problem with it.

Will try not to do it so much (or not!)

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 23/09/2018 19:03

Think you may have missed the text speak boat OP.
Whippersnappers today assure me that only oldies use text speak these days. The kids are all on their way to having ET style elongated thumbs and are perfectly capable of writing full sentences on a phone.

Cachailleacha · 23/09/2018 19:05

Meaning is clear without them, therefore not needed.

sprinklesandsauce · 23/09/2018 19:07

Do this myself.

Have done for a while

Treacletoots · 23/09/2018 19:07

Haha! Thanks everyone for your thoughts and clearly I am both guilty and also too old. I will go back to my manual typewriter and write up a letter :)

OP posts:
pigsDOfly · 23/09/2018 19:07

I do this as well but only in texts and on mn.

Can't see the problem tbh, it's a casual way of writing. I don't speak like that and wouldn't write like that in a letter.

AnoukSpirit · 23/09/2018 19:08

Is it a particularly gruelling recruitment process one has to go through to join the language police, or does it work on a self-appointment basis?

sprinklesandsauce · 23/09/2018 19:18

I hate text speak though, would never put, “goin 2 b l8”
I’d type , “running late sorry”
