To ask for Mirena advice?

Finally decided to go for this contraceptive option and having it fitted tomorrow. Any advice for before, during and after? How long before I'm protected and how long do I have to wait before I can DTD again?

Take pain killers prior to procedure. Protected straight away. May experience some discomfort and spotting initially. Good luck

Faster · 23/09/2018 18:20

Your protected straight away.
Before - take 2 paracetamol, about 30 mins before your appointment.
During - concentrate on relaxing and breathing. I’ve had two mirenas now and whilst it’s not the most fun I’ve had it’s also not the worst thing in the world. It does hurt, it was a deep cramping pain, but it lasted all of 5-10 seconds. Slightly achey afterwards, like period pain.
After - no shagging until your coil fitter tells you, you will probably spot at least, take paracetamol if you need them.

I bloody love mine.

Sukistjames · 23/09/2018 18:28

Thanks guys. I'll stock up on painkillers in the morning. Really not looking forward to it but as I'm not allowed the pill and I've had the MAP twice in 6 months (Blush) I think it's wise. Hoping I'm one of those who don't cramp loads after and get virtually no periods 🙏

I was told condoms for 7 days after fitting, but could have sex straight away with that proviso.

Faster · 23/09/2018 18:29

I found that doing a bit of deep breathing and making my stomach muscles relax definitely helped with the fitting.

Pebblesandfriends · 23/09/2018 18:31

I think it depends what time if the month you have it fitted. Be prepared to bleed for a few months on and off.

LordEmsworth · 23/09/2018 18:32

When I had my first fitted, the doctor gave me a bag of condoms to use for the first 7 days. I think it depends where you are in your cycle.

Fitting the first one was awful - I threw up afterwards, and had cramps for a week. There was no way I was going to be having sex during that time... But after 4.5 years with no periods I've just had it replaced, second time around was nowhere near as bad...

dementedpixie · 23/09/2018 18:33

It only protects straight away if it's fitted in the first 7 days of your cycle. If it's fitted at any other time then you need extra precautions for 7 days. I took painkillers beforehand

dementedpixie · 23/09/2018 18:34

I only had 1 period after footing and then they stopped completely.

dementedpixie · 23/09/2018 18:34

Fitting*

TurnipCake · 23/09/2018 18:37

Take painkillers beforehand. If they have the option of local anaesthetic for the cervix, take it.

On my third Mirena, it'll be my contraceptive choice for the rest of my reproductive life. Hope you love yours too

Sukistjames · 23/09/2018 18:41

Tomorrow will be day 3 of my period so I guess I'll be protected then?

Have painkillers and make sure you eat before your appointment.
4 months on (not the best first 3 months, lots of spotting and 1 light period, but I knew better times were ahead!) not a period, not a cramp.
The first night sucked (for me) but it passed and heat helps.
The chaperone (if you have one) will talk to you about all sorts, and the first you’ll know is the practitioner inserting the sizing implement to measure your uterus. It’s not painful but it took my breath away, especially as I was talking to the nurse about holidays and wasn’t expecting it!! That’s removed, the mirena inserted, that feels like a cramp, and job done. You might feel a bit wobbly afterwards, or you might feel fine. Just take it easy.
I was told condoms for 7 days and I had my mirena inserted on the last day of my period. I love it!
My face broke out a bit from about 6 weeks to about 10 weeks after insertion, but that’s all stopped now.
don’t watch YouTube videos or read horror stories online the night before like I did!

MummatoaMunchin · 23/09/2018 19:00

I went with my friend to have hers fitted a fee years ago now, it was uncomfortable going in and she had period pain after but other than that she was fine.

Im considering having this too, i didnt realise it stopped your periods? Im always worried about contraception that stops your period 🤔

Rachie1973 · 23/09/2018 19:09

I love my Mirena, this is my 5th.

Like mild drag on the day and nothing the next day.

Periods stopped immediately, mines on 6 years at the moment, I must sort that.

weegiemum · 23/09/2018 19:22

Fitting was fine, I loved the no period thing.

BUT if, once it's settled down, you get any symptoms you think might be caused by it go and ask to have it checked!!! Because I didn't and dd2 is now 14! I was pg by the time I realised it had slipped into my cervix.

Lymphy · 23/09/2018 19:53

It's seven days before you are covered unless it's fitted days 1-5 of your period, I still like to advise condoms though just to make sure (I'm a contraceptive nurse) you'll be fine, eat before you go and take some analgesia. Take a sanitary towel as well the NHS ones are a bit like surf boards!

Whyohsky · 23/09/2018 20:15

Fitting and removal not painful. The nine months of constant bleeding after were a nightmare. Would not recommend! Don’t do it, OP!

PeanuttyButter · 23/09/2018 20:17

Relax and take some pain killers just before. Pain last for all of 10seconds if that! - it’s like a really strong period pain.
Bit of mild period pain in the evening afterwards and I love mine. This is my third

Montsti · 23/09/2018 20:26

I had to have mine done in theatre under general! Obviously didn’t feel a thing during the op but a little discomfort and spotting afterwards...I then bled on and off for a couple of weeks but not heavy. That was 9 months ago and I haven’t had a period since...I had the Mirena before but during my c section for my 2nd child (they don’t do that anymore) and had no periods (just post birth bleeding) for 18 months until I had the mirena to ttc baby no. 3...

I highly recommend it!!!

bimbobaggins · 23/09/2018 20:30

If you had asked me in the first six months of having my first one fitted I’d have said don’t do it. I had high expectations of a miracle cure for extremely heavy and painful periods but unfortunately it took 6 months to settle. After that I loved it and got my second one fitted 6 months ago.
I would recommend it but keep your expectations of the first wee while low . It’s worth persevering

AuntieGeek · 23/09/2018 20:57

10 years of zero periods and no PMS symptoms. Had mine out in August as TTC and it was absolutely fine.

Darkstar4855 · 23/09/2018 21:49

I loved my 2, had six years with no periods and only had it out to ttc. Will be having another one as soon as baby is out!

The actual insertion was fine and took less than five minutes. I felt a bit faint whilst they were doing it and my blood pressure dropped a bit but I was fine after ten minutes lying on the couch.

Afterwards I had quite bad crampy pain for an hour or so (like really bad period pain) so I would agree with the recommendation to take painkillers before - next time I will take ibuprofen and paracetamol before.

Sukistjames · 24/09/2018 16:32

Update for anyone about to have one - had it fitted about 1 1/2 hours ago. Whole appointment lasted about 1/2 hour. Had to do a pregnancy test first and the fitting didn't take long at all. Mildly uncomfortable but the doctor was fab - he does loads as I was at the sexual health clinic. Slight cramps now but I'm on paracetamol and ibroprofen. Very surprised how little I felt it as I was prepared for much worse.
